Pentagon: Two U.S. Troops, Civilian Interpreter Killed in Syria Attack

WASHINGTON / DAMASCUS – Arab Telegraph – The U.S. Defense Department said two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed and three others wounded in an attack in the Syrian city of Palmyra during a meeting with local leaders.

A Pentagon spokesperson said the incident occurred while U.S. forces were conducting engagement activities as part of operations against Islamic State militants. The wounded personnel were evacuated and are receiving medical treatment.

A U.S. official said initial investigations indicate the attacker was affiliated with Islamic State and acted alone before being killed at the scene. The official added that there are indications of possible involvement or security lapses by partner forces, though investigations are ongoing.

The attack underscores continued security risks facing U.S. forces operating in Syria, despite years of military operations aimed at dismantling Islamic State networks.

The Pentagon said it is reviewing force protection measures and coordinating with partners as investigations continue.
