Exclusive: Sudan at a New Crossroads

By Arab Telegraph – Special Rep

Sudan stands once again at a defining moment, as fierce battles continue between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) across key cities including El Fasher, Omdurman, and Khartoum. The struggle for control has now spread eastward toward Port Sudan — the government’s temporary administrative capital.

According to military sources, the Sudanese army has strengthened its positions in the east and north, while RSF units are consolidating their grip on parts of Darfur and the western corridor. The humanitarian situation remains catastrophic, with the United Nations estimating more than 10 million displaced persons inside and outside Sudan.

Regional powers have intensified their involvement, each seeking to secure its own strategic interests:

  • The UAE continues to face accusations of logistical and financial support to RSF elements through neighboring channels.

  • Egypt maintains firm backing of the Sudanese army, emphasizing border security and preventing the spillover of instability.

  • Ethiopia seeks to exploit the vacuum in border areas to advance its influence near Al-Fashaga.

  • Turkey and Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, are pushing for diplomatic initiatives to stabilize the Red Sea region and protect their growing economic stakes.

Diplomatic observers describe Sudan as being caught in a “regional chess game”, where the battle for influence is as intense as the one fought on the ground.

Analysts warn that the next weeks could determine whether Sudan edges closer to partition — or begins a fragile path toward political negotiation under mounting international pressure.

In short:
Sudan’s fate today is being shaped not only by the bullets on its soil, but by the ambitions circling above it.
