North Korean singer, who is allegedly Kim Jong-Un’s ex-girlfriend, has appeared on state television alive and in good health, delivering a speech at a national art workers rally in Pyongyang recently. She was said to have been executed by firing squad last year.
The singer was said to have been caught up in palace intrigue last summer having incurred the displeasure of Ri Sol-ju, Mr Kim’s wife. The 31-year-old North Korean leader and the performer were said to have been teenage lovers but had been forced to break up their relationship by Kim Jong-il, the deceased Dear Leader.
Hyon and eleven well-known performers were allegedly caught making a sex tape and executed, Chosun Ilbo, a South Korean newspaper with close links to that country’s intelligence services reported in August last year.
But on television this week, Hyon expressed gratitude for Mr Kim’s leadership and pledged to work harder to “stoke up the flame for art and creative work”.
Kim Jong-Un has already demonstrated his ruthlessness by executing both his uncle and his one-time mistress, not to mention numerous other North Koreans who have incurred his displeasure.
Speculation as to the fate of Ri Sol-ju, the petite former singer whom he married in 2009, is growing in the aftermath of the sudden death of Kim’s uncle, Jang Sung Taek, whose execution for treason was announced by Pyongyang last Thursday.
The killing of a man until now regarded as a regime stalwart has demonstrated that even family members are not safe – and prompted anxious speculation about the fate of Ms Ri, who regularly appears by her husband’s side, but has not been seen in public since October.
