Stephen Quayle returns to cinema with “Black Box: What Happened to Flight 298”

Director Stephen Quayle returns to directing after a 9-year absence with his new film Black Box: What Happened to Flight 298, which is set to be released on June 25 in Egyptian cinemas. His last work was American Renegades, released in 2017. Quayle is known for directing Into the Storm and Final Destination 5. The new film is inspired by the short film The Vessel and falls within the genres of thriller and supernatural horror. It follows mysterious supernatural events surrounding Flight 298 of “Vero Airlines,” traveling from New Orleans to Seattle, which turns into the center of a terrifying mystery. Passengers encounter unexplained phenomena that threaten their lives and reveal unexpected secrets. The events are entirely fictional and are not based on any real aviation incident.

Quayle said, “I wanted to present a different experience within a confined space like an airplane, where the sense of safety turns into a real source of fear. The film doesn’t rely only on supernatural events, but on psychological tension and the escalating mystery among the characters. Flight 298 is not just an incident, but a puzzle that gradually unfolds, and each passenger holds a piece of the truth.” He added, “What attracted me to the project was its idea based on the unknown—what could happen when you’re stuck in the sky without a logical explanation? We tried to make the viewer feel as if they were on board the flight itself, experiencing every moment of anxiety and fear with the characters.” He أكد that the film blends thriller, suspense, and psychological horror while maintaining a human aspect focused on the characters’ reactions when facing the unexplainable.

The film is based on an original screenplay by Stephen Susco, a writer specializing in horror films, known for works such as The Grudge, The Grudge 2, Texas Chainsaw 3D, and Hell Fest. It was filmed entirely in Bulgaria and stars Holly White, Tom Brittney, Dean White O’Hara, Danny Mac, Kaja Chan, Asa Ali, Boudicca Ricketts, Syl Spelman, Molly Bell Wright, and Georgina Leonidas. The film is produced by Capstone Studios and Hammerstone Studios, and distributed domestically by United Motion Picture.
