{"id":80222,"date":"2017-01-04T11:07:09","date_gmt":"2017-01-04T09:07:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=80222"},"modified":"2017-01-04T11:07:09","modified_gmt":"2017-01-04T09:07:09","slug":"oil-prices-rise-on-tighter-supply-outlook-but-strong-dollar-weighs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=80222","title":{"rendered":"Oil prices rise on tighter supply outlook, but strong dollar weighs"},"content":{"rendered":"<section>\n<div id=\"rcs-articleHeader\" class=\"group wrap\"><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<div id=\"rcs-articleContent\" class=\"group wrap\">\n<div class=\"column1 col col-10\">\n<div class=\"slider slider-module slick-initialized slick-slider\">\n<div class=\"slick-list draggable\">\n<div class=\"slick-track\">\n<div class=\"slick-slide slick-cloned\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-slick-index=\"-1\">\n<div class=\"module-meta group\">\n<div class=\"module-nav module-num\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Oil rose on Wednesday, with top exporter Saudi Arabia expected to increase prices for its crude as part of planned supply cuts, although a strong dollar and moderate economic growth prospects restricted gains.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures CLc1 were trading at $52.50 per barrel at 0747 GMT, up 17 cents from the last settlement.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_2\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Brent crude futures LCOc1 were up 21 cents at $55.68 a barrel.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_3\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The gains were due to an expected tightening of physical oil supplies, as major producers like the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) plan to cut crude output from this month in an effort to end a fuel glut that has dogged markets since 2014.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_4\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Reflecting a tightening market, top oil exporter Saudi Arabia is expected to raise the official selling price (OSP) for its crude to Asia in February.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_5\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In Indonesia, the retroactive December OSP for its Minas crude was set at $52.62 a barrel, up $8.09 from the previous month, a government document showed on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_6\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">OSPs are a key indicator in determining the prices for crude futures.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_7\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Crude oil has risen&#8230; on expectations of reduced supply excess,&#8221; said Fawad Razaqzada, market analyst at futures brokerage Forex.com.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_8\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Futures prices are also reflecting tighter supply fundamentals.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_9\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Both Brent and WTI are in a so-called contango shape &lt;0#LCO:&gt; &lt;0#CL:&gt; since OPEC and other producers like Russia announced cuts, in which crude for delivery within the first half of this year is more expensive than spot contracts.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_10\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After that, however, the crude curves show flat to backwardated prices in which future deliveries become cheaper and spot contracts are more expensive, implying that there will be less supply to meet prompt needs.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_11\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Crude futures are also being held back by a strong U.S. dollar, which makes it more expensive for countries to import dollar-traded fuel.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The dollar hit a 14-year peak .DXY this week on the back of improving U.S. economic data.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_13\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Both foreign exchange and crude movements will be impacted by the status of the global economy.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_14\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Despite encouraging figures in late 2016 and the first days of this year, analysts said that growth prospects were moderate.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_15\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The West ended 2016 on a strong note. The Eurozone picked up steam, the UK is defying gravity and the U.S. is on a roll. Note, however, that this strength isn&#8217;t fully feeding through into Asia..
