{"id":76250,"date":"2016-11-20T17:29:05","date_gmt":"2016-11-20T15:29:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=76250"},"modified":"2016-11-20T17:29:05","modified_gmt":"2016-11-20T15:29:05","slug":"76250","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=76250","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<section>\n<div id=\"rcs-articleHeader\" class=\"group wrap\">\n<div class=\"column1 col col-10\">\n<div class=\"article-header\">\n<h1 class=\"article-headline\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Monkey incident sparks clashes in southern Libyan city of Sabha, 16 dead<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column2 col col-4\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><strong>At least 16 people died and 50 were wounded in Libya in four days of clashes between rival factions in the southern city of Sabha, a health official said on Sunday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_0\"><\/span>According to residents and local reports, the latest bout of violence erupted between two tribes after an incident in which a monkey that belonged to a shopkeeper from the Gaddadfa tribe attacked a group of schoolgirls who were passing by.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_1\"><\/span>The monkey pulled off one of the girls&#8217; head scarf, leading men from the Awlad Suleiman tribe to retaliate by killing three people from the Gaddadfa tribe as well as the monkey, according to a resident who spoke to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_2\"><\/span>City officials could not be reached to confirm the accounts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"teads-inread\">\u00a0&#8220;There was an escalation on the second and third days with the use of tanks, mortars and other heavy weapons,&#8221; the resident told Reuters by telephone, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the denigrating security situation.<\/div>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_4\"><\/span>&#8220;There are still sporadic clashes and life is completely shut down in the areas where there has been fighting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_5\"><\/span>Like other parts of Libya, Sabha has been periodically plagued by conflict since the uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi five years ago splintered the country into warring factions.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_6\"><\/span>In the Sabha region, a hub for migrant and arms smuggling in Libya&#8217;s often neglected south, militia abuses and the deterioration of living conditions have been especially acute.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_7\"><\/span>The Gaddadfa and the Awlad Suleiman represent the most powerful armed factions in the region.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_8\"><\/span>During the latest clashes, which took place in the city center, initial attempts by tribal leaders to calm the fighting and arrange a ceasefire so that bodies could be recovered had failed, residents said.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_9\"><\/span>By Sunday, Sabha Medical Centre had received the bodies of 16 people killed in the clashes and some 50 wounded, said a spokesman for the center.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are women and children among the wounded and some foreigners from sub-Saharan African countries among those killed due to indiscriminate shelling,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_11\"><\/span>The city lies about 660km (410 miles) south of Tripoli.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section dir=\"ltr\">\n<div id=\"rcs-articleContent\" class=\"group wrap\">\n<div class=\"column1 col col-10\">\n<div class=\"linebreak\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"core-share  \" data-share-short-url=\"http:\/\/reut.rs\/2g70tgh\" data-share-url=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-libya-security-sabha-idUSKBN13F0PD\" data-share-title=\"Monkey incident sparks clashes in southern Libyan city of Sabha, 16 dead\" data-share-desc=\"TRIPOLI (Reuters) - At least 16 people died and 50 were wounded in Libya in four days of clashes between rival factions in the southern city of Sabha, a health official said on Sunday.\nAccording to residents and local reports, the latest bo\" data-share-img=\"\" data-share=\"twitter,facebook,linkedin,mailArticle\" data-share-id=\"USKBN13F0PD\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Monkey incident sparks clashes in southern Libyan city of Sabha, 16 dead At least 16 people died and 50 were wounded in Libya in four days of clashes between rival factions in the southern city of Sabha, a health official said on Sunday.
