METALS-Zinc hits 10-month peak, copper also up as dollar slides<\/h1>\n

Zinc notched up a new 10-month high on Friday after the dollar tumbled due to weak U.S. jobs data and as bullish speculators kept buying ahead of expected shortages.<\/p>\n

Copper rose after a further erosion of inventories and other base metals also joined the rally as the likelihood of early U.S. rate hikes diminished.<\/p>\n

Metals were boosted by data showing the U.S. economy created the fewest number of jobs in more than than 5-1\/2 years in May, pointing to labour market weakness that could make it difficult for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates.<\/p>\n

The dollar index dropped 1.5 percent to a three-week low, boosting commodities by making them cheaper for buyers outside the United States.<\/p>\n

Zinc, mainly used for galvanising steel, is the best performer on the London Metal Exchange this year with gains of nearly 25 percent after major mines closed and Chinese smelters pledged to slash output.<\/p>\n

Three-month LME zinc closed 0.5 percent higher at $1,992 a tonne, after touching $2,013, the highest since July 23 last year, fuelled by buying from commodity trading advisors (CTAs), which run funds based on technical signals such as momentum, traders said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zinc was also the biggest LME gainer of the week, with a 5 percent advance.<\/p>\n

Zinc was at a crossroads that could spur further gains if key levels were broken, said Gianclaudio Torlizzi, partner at consultancy T-Commodity in Milan.<\/p>\n

“Zinc may close above the 100-week moving average at $1,990 for the first time since the second quarter last year, plus key resistance is at $1,980, so that could be an interesting move,” he said earlier on Friday.<\/p>\n

A break above those levels on a weekly basis could spur the market towards $2,100, he added.<\/p>\n

LME copper also forged higher, climbing 1.7 percent to end at $4,688 a tonne after closing little changed in the previous session and rebounding from a one-week low at $4,565.50 on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

“The trigger was the drawdown in the stocks in Shanghai. Also, copper is still managing to hold above $4,500, which is the real make-or-break level,” Torlizzi said.<\/p>\n

Copper inventories in warehouses monitored by the Shanghai Futures Exchange fell again this week, having slid 47 percent since mid-March, data showed on Friday.<\/p>\n

LME stocks have also shrunk, declining by 35 percent so far this year. Much of those inventories are likely moving into non-exchange storage depots linked to finance arrangements, analysts said.<\/p>\n

There was underlying concern, however, about demand in top metals consumer China, highlighted on Friday after data showed growth in its services sector hit a three-month low in May<\/span><\/p>\n

Aluminium closed up 0.3 percent at $1,544, lead gained 0.6 percent to $1,726, tin climbed 2 percent to end at $16,595 and nickel rose 0.4 percent to $8,500.<\/p>\n
