That was its lowest since Feb. 17, pressured by\r\nstrength in the dollar and a rise in global share prices,\r\nincreasing investors' risk appetite and leaving gold set for a\r\n6.3 percent decline in May.\r\n    Spot silver was headed for its biggest monthly loss\r\nsince September 2014, down almost 10 percent. It touched a\r\nseven-week low in the previous session before recovering to\r\n$15.99 on Tuesday.\r\n    Investment inflows have slowed in response to speculation\r\nover the prospect of higher U.S. interest rates soon, while the\r\nlack of a physical demand base has exposed gold to some of the\r\nmoves seen recently, Mitsubishi Corp analyst Jonathan Butler\r\nsaid.\r\n    U.S. data on Friday showed that hedge funds and money\r\nmanagers cut their bullish bets in U.S. gold futures and options\r\nto their lowest in almost two months. \r\n    Gold, which had risen 16 percent in the first quarter, has\r\nbeen under pressure since the release of the minutes from the\r\nFederal Reserve's April meeting boosted expectations of an\r\nimminent U.S. rate rise. Subsequent comments from key central\r\nbank officials, including Fed Chair Janet Yellen, have suggested\r\nan increase will come in June or July. \r\n    The dollar hovered near its highest in two months against a\r\nbasket of currencies on Tuesday. \r\n    \"Short-term downside risks are primarily related to a\r\nfurther strengthening of the U.S. dollar and a further cooling\r\nof futures market sentiment,\" Julius Baer said in a note.\r\n    Investors will monitor May U.S. private-sector ISM\r\nmanufacturing data, due on Wednesday, and non-farm payrolls on\r\nFriday. Solid readings could heighten expectations for a move as\r\nearly as the Fed's June 14-15 policy meeting. \r\n    An increase in rates would raise the opportunity cost of\r\nholding gold, which does not earn interest.
