More formally a \u201cdistributed ledger\u201d, a blockchain is a digital record, or ledger, of assets or events that can be shared, or distributed, among many different parties.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Now CoinDesk has compiled a list of seven Asian banks that it says are investigating bitcoin and blockchain technology. It lists them as:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li>Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, which is Japan\u2019s largest bank and has developed its own digital currency as part of its research into blockchain and distributed ledger technology;<\/li>\n<li>KB Kookmin Bank of South Korea, which is\u00a0developing a blockchain solution\u00a0for international\u00a0remittances\u00a0with the aim of offering\u00a0\u201csafer and faster\u201d money transmission\u00a0services;<\/li>\n<li>DBS Bank of Singapore, which has formed a partnership with the UK\u2019s Standard Chartered to create a distributed ledger project for trade finance;<\/li>\n<li>SBI Sumishin Net Bank of Japan, which is\u00a0developing a proof-of-concept aimed at exploring blockchain-based banking services in conjunction with Nomura Research Institute, the research arm of Nomura Holdings;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The People\u2019s Bank of China, which is <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/news.markets\/tech\/china-working-towards-introduction-of-a-rival-to-bitcoin-9588\/\">considering launching its own digital currency<\/a>;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Mizuho Bank of Japan, which has joined the New-York based R3CEV consortium of 42 financial companies researching and developing the use of blockchain in the finance industry; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Shinhan Bank of South Korea, which has contributed to the funding of a blockchain remittance startup named Streami.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Separately, Australia\u2019s Westpac is <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.afr.com\/technology\/westpac-looks-to-blockchain-robots-and-drones-in-fight-for-the-future-20160212-gmsvab\" target=\"_blank\">reported by the <em>Australian Financial Review<\/em><\/a> to be looking to blockchain \u2013 as well as robots and drones \u2013 as a \u201cweapon in the war against obsolescence\u201d. And across the other side of the world, Royal Bank of Canada is <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/royal-bank-of-canada-expands-blockchain-testing-beyond-loyalty\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported by CoinDesk<\/a> to be looking at different use cases for the technology, with tests focused on applications for\u00a0capital markets, cross-border payments and smart contracts.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Banks throughout Asia have begun to investigate blockchain technology after previously lagging behind their North American and European competitors, according to a report on the specialist website CoinDesk.
