{"id":48007,"date":"2016-02-12T23:38:41","date_gmt":"2016-02-12T21:38:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=48007"},"modified":"2016-02-12T23:38:41","modified_gmt":"2016-02-12T21:38:41","slug":"millennium-after-split-pope-and-russian-patriarch-embrace-in-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=48007","title":{"rendered":"Millennium after split, pope and Russian patriarch embrace in Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Pope Francis and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill embraced and kissed on Friday in a historic meeting nearly 1,000 years after the Eastern and Western branches of Christianity split apart.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Finally,&#8221; Francis said as he and Kirill entered through doors on opposite sides of a room at Havana airport to begin private talks. &#8220;We are brothers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The two religious leaders, guests of a Communist government, are addressing ways of healing the rift between their Churches as well as their concerns over the persecution of Christians in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">They were expected to speak about territorial disputes between the two Churches after the fall of the Soviet Union, and issue a joint declaration following the meeting.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Francis, dressed in white with a skullcap, and Kirill, wearing a tall, domed hat that dangled a white stole over black robes, joined arms and kissed on both cheeks.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;It is very clear that this is the will of God,&#8221; Francis said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Yes, things are much easier now,&#8221; Kirill said. Both men spoke through interpreters and were accompanied by their top aides in the quest for Christian unity, Cardinal Kurt Koch and Russian Metropolitan Hilarion.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Their meeting, announced just a week ago, also carried political overtones, coming at a time of Russian disagreements with the West over Syria and Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Cuban President Raul Castro and Cardinal Jaime Ortega, the Catholic Church&#8217;s highest representative in Cuba, greeted the pope as he got off the plane.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kirill arrived in Havana on Thursday and was also greeted by Castro, an ally of Russia who received Francis in Cuba just five months ago.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Argentine pontiff previously played a role in rapprochement between the United States and Cuba, which restored diplomatic relations last year after a 54-year break.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Now the pope, leader of the 1.2 billion member Catholic Church, is seeking to repair a much longer rupture.
