{"id":47850,"date":"2016-02-08T22:45:38","date_gmt":"2016-02-08T20:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=47850"},"modified":"2016-02-08T22:45:38","modified_gmt":"2016-02-08T20:45:38","slug":"wall-street-extends-losses-in-broad-selloff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=47850","title":{"rendered":"Wall Street extends losses in broad selloff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span class=\"articleLocatio&lt;\/span&gt;n\">U.S. stocks added to losses in late Monday trading in a broad selloff that drove financial, tech, consumer and materials indexes down more than 3 percent amid persistent fears of a global slowdown.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Nasdaq led losses for a second straight session, weighed down by Facebook, Amazon and other stocks that had lent strength to the market last year.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;When you see selling this broad and non-discriminant, when everything is being sold, it tends to end when it just exhausts everyone who\u2019s worried,&#8221; said Rick Meckler, president of LibertyView Capital Management in Jersey City, New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Financial shares sank on worries over the U.S. economy and uncertainty whether the U.S. Federal Reserve will raise rates this year. The S&amp;P financial index .SPSY was down 3.5 percent and is off about 15 percent for the year, the worst-performing of the 10 major S&amp;P sectors.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The losses followed a similar drop in European bank shares.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Goldman Sachs (<span id=\"symbol_GS.N_1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/stocks\/overview?symbol=GS.N\">GS.N<\/a><\/span>) dropped 6.5 percent, set for its biggest drop in more than three years and weighing the most on the Dow.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">At 2:40 p.m. the Dow Jones industrial average <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/markets\/index?symbol=us%21dji\">.DJI<\/a> was down 377.41 points, or 2.33 percent, to 15,827.56, the S&amp;P 500 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/markets\/index?symbol=us%21spx\">.SPX<\/a> had lost 49.09 points, or 2.61 percent, to 1,830.96 and the Nasdaq Composite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/markets\/index?symbol=us%21comp\">.IXIC<\/a> had dropped 144.92 points, or 3.32 percent, to 4,218.22.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Chesapeake Energy (<span id=\"symbol_CHK.N_5\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/stocks\/overview?symbol=CHK.N\">CHK.N<\/a><\/span>) tumbled 35 percent to $1.97 after sources told Reuters that the natgas company had tapped existing adviser Kirkland &amp; Ellis to explore restructuring options. Chesapeake said it has no plans to pursue a bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Microsoft (<span id=\"symbol_MSFT.O_6\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/stocks\/overview?symbol=MSFT.O\">MSFT.O<\/a><\/span>), Amazon (<span id=\"symbol_AMZN.O_7\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/stocks\/overview?symbol=AMZN.O\">AMZN.O<\/a><\/span>), Alphabet (<span id=\"symbol_GOOGL.O_8\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/stocks\/overview?symbol=GOOGL.O\">GOOGL.O<\/a><\/span>) and Facebook (<span id=\"symbol_FB.O_9\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/stocks\/overview?symbol=FB.O\">FB.O<\/a><\/span>) were down between 2.5 percent and 6 percent.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Cognizant (<span id=\"symbol_CTSH.O_10\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/stocks\/overview?symbol=CTSH.O\">CTSH.O<\/a><\/span>) dropped 8.9 percent to $53.32 after the IT services provider issued a weak sales forecast.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Investors have also been worried about the unraveling of rich valuations in a narrow group of stocks that led the market higher through most of 2015.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by 2,708 to 393, for a 6.89-to-1 ratio on the downside; on the Nasdaq, 2,223 issues fell and 569 advanced for a 3.91-to-1 ratio favoring decliners.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The S&amp;P 500 posted 5 new 52-week highs and 96 new lows; the Nasdaq recorded 3 new highs and 475 new lows.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. stocks added to losses in late Monday trading in a broad selloff that drove financial, tech, consumer and materials indexes down more than 3 percent amid persistent fears of a global slowdown.
