{"id":46189,"date":"2016-01-04T23:21:56","date_gmt":"2016-01-04T21:21:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=46189"},"modified":"2016-01-04T23:21:56","modified_gmt":"2016-01-04T21:21:56","slug":"jse-starts-year-on-negative-note","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=46189","title":{"rendered":"JSE starts year on negative note"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Johannesburg &#8211; The JSE started the year on a negative note as markets worldwide were spooked on Monday by a crash in Chinese share prices caused by more bad news about the Chinese economy, while rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East also knocked equities and the dollar lower.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The only beneficiary was gold shares, with the Gold index more than 5% higher by midday after the gold price jumped nearly 1% on Monday, bolstered by safe-haven bids for the yellow metal in reaction to the tension in the Middle East.<br \/>\nInvestors bet on gold as an alternative investment during times of geopolitical and financial uncertainty, though safe-haven rallies typically tend to be short-lived.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The result was that by midday the All-share index was again below 50 000 points, trading 2.63% lower at 49 360 points. The Top 40 index, which is regarded as a better indication of the state of the market, lost 2.76% to 44 533 points.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">All the major indices were down, except the Gold index which was 5.41% stronger at midday. The biggest loser was the Financial index which was 4.25% down. The losses were again the result of the weak rand which traded at R15.58 to the dollar at midday, despite a softer dollar.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The week started badly for world markets when Chinese stock trading was halted for the rest of the day on Monday after the CSI 300 Index plunged more than 7%.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Stocks fell as manufacturing contracted for a fifth straight month and investors anticipated the end of a ban on share sales by major stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Under the mechanism, which only became effective on Monday, a move of 5% in the CSI 300 triggers a 15-minute halt for stocks, options and index futures, while a move of 7% closes the market for the rest of the day. The CSI 300 of companies listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen fell as much as 7.02% before trading was suspended.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Analysts said the manufacturing data was a disappointment as they believed the economic slowdown in China had run its course.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">By midday the gold price traded 1.07% higher at $1 072.43 per ounce after Saudi Arabia cut ties with Iran on Sunday, responding to the storming of its embassy in Tehran in an escalating row between the rival Middle East powers over Riyadh&#8217;s execution of a Shi&#8217;ite Muslim cleric.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Central Rand\u00a0was the biggest gainer among the gold shares, trading 72.66% higher at R2.40 while Harmony\u00a0gained 10% to R17.16. Sibanye\u00a0was 7.83% stronger at R24.64.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The oil price was also slightly higher on Monday due to the fallout in the Middle East. By midday Brent traded at $37.32. Sasol did not benefit however and was 0.37% softer at R417.83, after reaching a low of R408.23 in earlier trade.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Sanlamwas again the biggest loser in the financial sector, trading a massive 6.39% softer at R56.67, while FirstRand\u00a0lost 4.53% to R40.45. At midday Standard Bank was 2.47% lower at R110.70.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The resources sector lost 2.62% as weak manufacturing in China is bad for commodities demand, with Anglo American losing 7.91% to R63.53 and Kumba 7.77% to R38.00. BHP Billiton\u00a0was 2.62% weaker at R169.39.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Softer European markets pulled the Industrial index 2.26% lower. Two of the giants in the sector with huge interests in the Chinese economy, Naspers\u00a0and Richemont, traded much lower.
