They wanted English, French, or German but inadequate grades limited their options to Hebrew.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;I wanted to study English but I did not obtain enough grades in my Thanaweya Amma (high school diploma in Egypt), so I found myself learning Hebrew instead,&#8221; says Miss Abudl Karim, 21, who enthralled the audience with her song Yerosholim shall Zahav, Hatikiva and Hava Naguilla by late Israeli artist Naomi Shamir, whom she discovered on the Internet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;My parents are disappointed, but I took my chance with this language. When I tell my friends that I study Hebrew they laugh at me. But I intend to continue my studies and then teach at Ain Shams University,&#8221; she says with a smile.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Before the toppling of former president Hosni Mubarak in 2011, distinguished students of Hebrew often secured jobs with the intelligence services, or the radio station Qol Qaheer. Such employment, however, is now limited because of security concerns and lack of funds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;When I complete my studies I will knock on all doors &#8212; the intelligence service, the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the newspapers, which need Arabic-Hebrew translators,&#8221; says Ahmed Moustafa, 20, an undergraduate, who sang Va Sheim Ellah and Makhar Ullah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In a humorous festival sketch poking fun at his own minimal job prospects, he answers a fellow student who asks him what he will do when he leaves university.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;Nothing. But at least I spent years in the company of pretty girls.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The students learn Hebrew language, grammar, literature and the songs of the Hebrew bible (Old Testament), but confess they have never met neither a Jew, nor an Israeli.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;I used the Internet to communicate with them but no one responded,&#8221; says Mr. Moustafa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Prior to the 1948 and 1956 wars, Egypt once boasted a large Jewish community but the numbers dwindled over time. There has been no discernible community since Egyptian Jews headed to Israel in the years after the Jewish state was founded in 1948. By 1956, 120,000 Jews &#8212; nearly the entire community &#8212; had emigrated. The remaining 200 Jews stay in Cairo and Alexandria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Hebrew Professor Mohammed Mansour said that believed that despite the difficulties there were good opportunities for Hebrew-language graduates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;Many think it is a waste of time but Hebrew is very important,&#8221; says the 39-year-old academic with a doctorate in the language.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;People who speak Hebrew have very important positions in the world. The best will find work,&#8221; he says of his students.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The\u00a0 teachers in the university&#8217;s Hebrew department are Muslims and Christians, while the department&#8217;s library books are dilapidated and in need of replacement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Professor Mansour said that the government had started television<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">broadcasts in Hebrew aimed at the Jewish state and to give the Arab view of the<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Palestinian-Israeli conflict.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;Egypt did not want to leave the arena free for the Israeli media apparatus. Israeli citizens should be aware of other opinions concerning the Palestinian issue and peace between Israel and the Arabs,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The broadcasts, including news, current affairs discussions, and cultural slots, is using up to 50 Egyptian Hebrew speakers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;The channel offers\u00a0 knowledge to Israelis about Egypt&#8217;s history, development and literature,&#8221; said Professor Mansour, who also heads Egypt&#8217;s seven-hour-a-day Hebrew radio service.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ashraf Sadek Cairo.
