This shortage has worsened from 53%in 2021 to 64% in 2023, the Tanzanian Ministry of Health said.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__body\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"article__block\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\"article__text\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Tanzanian Ministry of Health revealed how the cause of death statistics for children under five changed between 2022 and 2023 in the East African country.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-218785 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/OIP-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"180\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__block\" data-type=\"quote\">\n<div class=\"article__quote\">\n<div class=\"article__quote-bg\">\n<div class=\"article__quote-bg-line\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__quote-text\">\n<p style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">&#8220;Birth asphyxia [lack of oxygen and blood flow to the brain] and birth trauma was among the leading causes death in two years period, with a slight increase from 22.8% to 23.6.4%,&#8221; the ministry reported in an Annual Health Statistics Tables and Figures 2023 released in the end of 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__quote-info\">\n<div class=\"elem-info\">\n<div class=\"elem-info__share\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__block\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\"article__text\" style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\"><em>There were also significant increases in deaths from the following causes:<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__block\" data-type=\"list\">\n<div class=\"article__list\">\n<div class=\"article__list-item\" style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">\n<div class=\"article__list-label\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"\">lower respiratory infections (9.6% to 13.6%);<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__list-item\" style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">\n<div class=\"article__list-label\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"\">malaria (4.3% to 6.1%);<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__list-item\" style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">\n<div class=\"article__list-label\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"\">protein-energy malnutrition (3.4% to 4.5%).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__block\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\"article__text\" style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">However, the number of deaths from conditions arising during the perinatal period fell from 29.3% to 11.3%.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__block\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\"article__text\" style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: left;\">The percentages for prematurity and low birth weight, as well as for congenital anomalies, including heart anomalies, remained almost stable, while deaths from diarrhea diseases and\u00a0infectious diseases\u00a0increased modestly, the health ministry added.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While the Tanzanian healthcare sector made notable advancements in 2023, it still faces considerable challenges, particularly in addressing the shortage of health workers, with only 36% of the required number available.
