Footing a bill of that scale, even in part, would \u201c<em>bankrupt Britain<\/em>&#8220;, the newspaper warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The publication speculated whether British Prime Minister Keir Starmer would be able to \u201c<em>rebuff the entire Caribbean.<\/em>\u201d It further and slammed the \u201c<em>questionable<\/em>\u201d calculations of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brattle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Report-on-Reparations-for-Transatlantic-Chattel-Slavery-in-the-Americas-and-the-Caribbean.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a report by US-based consultancy<\/a>, Brattle Group, which claimed \u00a3206bln would be the \u201ccheap option\u201d for the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">More than 30 countries can expect Western states to pay reparations for the transatlantic slave trade, the&nbsp;<em>Report on Reparations for Transatlantic Chattel Slavery in the Americas and the Caribbean<\/em>, published in 2023, noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In March, the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) agreed to put the issue of \u201c<em>reparatory justice<\/em>\u201d on the table at the CHOGM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWhen we meet in Samoa, the Caribbean leaders [will] very forcefully speak to the Commonwealth as one voice. And there is one particular country with a new King, and a Labor government with an outstanding mandate, and we look forward to the reaction in October,\u201d stated Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Keith Rowley in August.<a href=\"https:\/\/sputnikglobe.com\/20241013\/britain-may-face-a-reparations-bill-worth-200bn-forrole-in-colonial-slave-trade-1120534825.html#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sputnikglobe.com\/20220324\/prince-william-calls-appalling-atrocity-of-the-slave-trade-a-stain-on-our-history-in-jamaica-1094137925.html#:~:text=Prince%20William%20Calls%20%27Appalling%20Atrocity%27%20of%20the%20Slave%20Trade%20a%20%27Stain%20on%20our%20History%27%20in%20Jamaica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reparations for slavery<\/a>&nbsp;and colonialism should be an inherent part of a new &#8220;global reset&#8221;, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, who is leading the reparation demands from the West Indies nations, declared in an address at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September. The Barbados PM noted in a recent tweet that she had held a telephone conversation with King Charles III earlier in October to discuss the matter. Both the British monarch and Starmer are expected to attend the CHOGM gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After gaining full independence in 1966, Barbados transitioned from a constitutional monarchy to a Republic in November 2021. It became the fifth Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country to replace Britain\u2019s then monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, as its head of state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In recent years, the Caribbean states&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sputnikglobe.com\/20220917\/for-people-in-caribbean-leaving-british-monarchy-more-than-symbolic-change-1100890573.html#:~:text=For%20People%20in%20Caribbean%2C%20Leaving%20British%20Monarchy%20More%20Than%20Symbolic%20Change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have increasingly spoken out<\/a>&nbsp;on the need for Great Britain to pay reparations for its slave trade, which was actively promoted by London in the 17th and 18th centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">At the previous Commonwealth summit in Rwanda in 2022, then heir to the British throne, Prince Charles, expressed &#8220;sorrow&#8221; over the \u201cmost painful period of our history&#8221;, but failed to offer an explicit verbal apology to the residents of the former colonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An alliance was formed by the African Union and Caribbean countries last year to present a \u201cunited front\u201d in a bid to seek reparations from former colonizer countries for \u201chistorical mass crimes\u201d.
