{"id":211781,"date":"2024-10-02T14:58:37","date_gmt":"2024-10-02T11:58:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=211781"},"modified":"2024-11-21T22:30:04","modified_gmt":"2024-11-21T20:30:04","slug":"irans-attack-on-israel-shows-peril-of-mistaking-restraint-for-weakness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=211781","title":{"rendered":"Iran\u2019s Attack on Israel Shows Peril of Mistaking Restraint for Weakness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Iran launched a significant retaliatory strike against Israel Tuesday in an operation codenamed Operation True Promise II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If the country\u2019s attack in April demonstrated Tehran\u2019s ability to penetrate Israel\u2019s vaunted Iron Dome, Tuesday\u2019s strike made good on its promise to follow it up with something more substantial if provoked.&nbsp;<strong>Iran&nbsp;<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/iran-says-it-has-finished-attack-israel-amid-fears-spreading-conflict-2024-10-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a><\/u>&nbsp;it targeted three Israeli military bases in an attack that reportedly struck multiple F-35 fighter jets.<\/strong>&nbsp;The US-provided aircraft would\u2019ve been used to target Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah last week and would constitute an important part of Israel\u2019s military force if it follows through on a threatened invasion of Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rumble.com\/v5h21e5-iran-fires-missiles-on-israel-scholz-wants-call-with-putin-dockworkers-stri.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Multiple analysts joined Sputnik<\/a>\u00a0to comment on the event Tuesday, noting that Tehran has demonstrated substantial military power after practicing restraint for an extended period<em>\u201cAre people mistaking restraint with weakness?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0asked The Critical Hour host Wilmer Leon, adding, \u201cit seems as though there&#8217;s a very disciplined tactic here of measured response.\u201d\u201cIt does seem so,\u201d claimed journalist\u00a0<strong>Robert Fantina<\/strong>, the author of\u00a0<em>Settler Colonialism in Palestine and Kashmir<\/em>. \u201cIt does seem that if people are going to mistake that measured response for weakness, they&#8217;re going to regret it because they&#8217;re going to be proven wrong.<a href=\"https:\/\/sputnikglobe.com\/20241002\/irans-attack-on-israel-shows-peril-of-mistaking-restraint-for-weakness-1120379834.html#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIran does not want to be attacked by the United States, obviously,\u201d the commentator noted. \u201cAnd any attack against Israel \u2013 even retaliatory, even in self-defense \u2013 would bring the United States into the war, unless the response is very measured, very well planned, and not a kind of random carpet-bombing sort of thing.&nbsp;<strong>Not the sort of thing that Israel is doing to Lebanon and Gaza.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cSo, I think that the government of Iran is waiting and watching, and it&#8217;s playing the long game.&nbsp;<strong>It&#8217;s not necessarily looking for an immediate victory, but it does want to see progress in peace in the region,<\/strong>&nbsp;and that means the defeat of Israel. How it will do that remains to be seen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Author and independent journalist&nbsp;<strong>Esther Iverem<\/strong>&nbsp;agreed with the assessment, noting that many observers predicted \u201cthis attack would be much larger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThat previous attack was just almost like a showpiece to let Israel know that, \u2018not only can we hit you, but we can hit you hard. Our missiles can get through your many layers of defense even with all of your protectors in NATO and in the US, basically shooting down most of those key projectiles for you; our main missiles hit their targets and hit them precisely and hard,\u2019\u201d said the radio host, summarizing Tehran\u2019s perspective.<a href=\"https:\/\/sputnikglobe.com\/20241002\/irans-attack-on-israel-shows-peril-of-mistaking-restraint-for-weakness-1120379834.html#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Iran\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/oct\/01\/stopping-iran-attack-would-have-forced-israel-to-use-sophisticated-and-expensive-defences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0it deployed its hypersonic Fatteh-2 missile during Tuesday\u2019s attack, which is able to maneuver at a speed of about 10,000 miles per hour (over 16,000 kilometers per hour).
