Africa has recorded over 26,000 suspected cases and 724 deaths from mpox in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Rwanda launched a vaccination campaign against mpox, using 1,000 doses of vaccine acquired from Nigeria under a bilateral agreement. According to the African Union health agency, hundreds of mpox&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.sputniknews.africa\/20240909\/1068212088.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vaccines<\/a>&nbsp;have been administered since September 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">These first vaccinations were carried out in seven districts bordering the DRC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The vaccination campaign targets &#8220;medical personnel, cross-border workers, people working in tourism, and other high-risk groups,&#8221; Rwanda&#8217;s Ministry of Health emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In the DRC, the epicenter of the epidemic, vaccinations will begin in the first week of October, indicated Jean Kaseya, Director-General of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.sputniknews.africa\/20240913\/africa-cdc-confident-in-raising-600-million-for-mpox-response-calls-for-western-solidarity-1068265619.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;We can say today that mpox is not under control in Africa, we still have an increase in cases that is becoming worrying for all of us,&#8221; Jean Kaseya said.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.sputniknews.africa\/20240920\/africas-first-vaccination-campaign-against-mpox-starts-in-rwanda-1068349132.html#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Amid the global rise in mpox cases,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.sputniknews.africa\/20240905\/1068165826.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Russia&#8217;s consumer rights watchdog<\/a>&nbsp;pointed to the fact that the country has its own Orthopoxvac vaccine, based on a weakened live smallpox virus, which is also effective against mpox.
