{"id":210766,"date":"2024-09-12T22:24:46","date_gmt":"2024-09-12T19:24:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=210766"},"modified":"2024-11-21T22:30:30","modified_gmt":"2024-11-21T20:30:30","slug":"scholzs-pro-war-policy-faces-setback-in-eastern-germany-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=210766","title":{"rendered":"Scholz\u2019s Pro-War Policy Faces Setback in Eastern Germany Elections"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Anti-establishment politicians in the eastern half of the country performed strongly in state-level elections as members of the German chancellor\u2019s so-called \u201ctraffic light coalition\u201d came up short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Parties critical of Olaf Scholz\u2019s support for the Western-backed Ukraine proxy war against Russia fared well in elections in eastern German states Sunday, causing the German chancellor to lament the \u201cbitter\u201d results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe election results of Sunday are bitter \u2013 also for us,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/german-leaders-react-to-far-right-surge-in-thuringia-saxony\/live-70107493\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Scholz. \u201cAll democratic parties are now called upon to form stable governments without right-wing extremists\u2026 Our country cannot and must not become accustomed to this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sputnikglobe.com\/20240903\/scholzs-pro-war-policy-faces-setback-in-eastern-germany-elections-1119990527.html#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The strong&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7f4844b1-b2bd-4503-b481-ac0471a1b75b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">performance<\/a>&nbsp;of the right-wing Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland party made headlines this weekend. The party received an unprecedented share of the vote thanks in part to substantial&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/p.dw.com\/p\/4kBif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">support<\/a>&nbsp;from 18 to 29 year olds, surging to a close second place to the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party in Saxony with 30.6% of the vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>The AfD won its first German regional election in the state of Thuringia by almost 10 points, finishing with 32.8% of the vote.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Other opposition parties also performed well.&nbsp;<strong>The upstart left-wing Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) received 11.8% of the vote in Saxony and 15.8% in Thuringia.<\/strong>&nbsp;The democratic socialist Die Linke, which traces its lineage to the former East German Socialist Unity Party (SED), received 13.1% in Thuringia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\"> The AfD, BSW, and Die Linke were relatively united in their expression of opposition to Scholz\u2019s support for Ukraine\u2019s war against Russia.&nbsp;<strong>Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance both&nbsp;<u><a href=\"https:\/\/asiatimes.com\/2024\/09\/east-germany-votes-for-right-wing-afd-against-ukraine-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a><\/u>&nbsp;for an end to arms shipments to the Kiev regime and immediate negotiations to bring about a peaceful end to the conflict.<\/strong>&nbsp;The BSW has also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/p.dw.com\/p\/4kAR5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demanded<\/a>&nbsp;a popular referendum on plans to station US missiles in Germany as a condition for any coalition government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Die Linke has been more internally divided on the issue, but influential politicians within the party have also strongly criticized Scholz\u2019s pro-war stance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cRussia will not be forced to its knees by weapon supplies,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/english.almayadeen.net\/news\/politics\/die-linke-leader:-scholz-fails-to-see-big-picture-regarding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Die Linke co-chair Dietmar Bartsch in 2023. \u201cWho says that the people of Ukraine want more weapons? Most Ukrainians want only for the war to end so that they could live in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sputnikglobe.com\/20240903\/scholzs-pro-war-policy-faces-setback-in-eastern-germany-elections-1119990527.html#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">AfD has also strongly criticized the German chancellor for his response to the apparent sabotage of the Russo-German Nord Stream gas pipeline in 2022, which is widely perceived to have been carried out by or on behalf of the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>\u201cCritical infrastructure on which the competitiveness of German industry depends was blown away before our eyes,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anews.com.tr\/world\/2023\/08\/06\/candidate-for-german-far-right-afd-says-us-behind-pipeline-sabotage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0AfD Minister of European Parliament Maximilian Krah on the issue. \u201cI still have enough contacts in the US that my American friends can tell me: &#8216;Of course it was the United States [who destroyed the pipeline], who else?\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThere is no reason to assume that the German government is seriously interested in unearthing the truth about who is behind the Nord Stream attacks,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sputnikglobe.com\/20240820\/ex-afd-mep-germany-would-rather-upend-its-economy-than-slash-military-aid-to-ukraine-1119847573.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said AfD politician Dr. Gunnar Beck<\/a>\u00a0recently. \u201cThe German government regularly yields to international pressure from both the EU and the US. It will not be able and not be willing, more importantly, to assert the national interests.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/sputnikglobe.com\/20240903\/scholzs-pro-war-policy-faces-setback-in-eastern-germany-elections-1119990527.html#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland has drawn significant scrutiny in Europe for its alleged sympathies towards the former German Nazi party.&nbsp;<strong>Krah was heavily criticized in May for&nbsp;<u><a href=\"https:\/\/sputnikglobe.com\/20240525\/liberal-fascism-analyst-says-european-legacy-is-one-of-a-criminal-gangster-cartel-1118622107.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">comments that appeared to defend<\/a><\/u>&nbsp;some members of the Nazi Schutzstaffel (SS) paramilitary organization.<\/strong>&nbsp;Earlier this year, the co-leader of the AfD in Thuringia Bjorn Hocke was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-far-right-politician-conviction-nazi-slogan-ccda2b9beef36efd124c2ae610681bf8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fined<\/a>&nbsp;for using a banned Nazi slogan during a speech at a campaign rally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>AfD has nonetheless enjoyed increasing support for its criticism of the German political establishment, particularly regarding the Ukraine proxy war and immigration policy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anti-establishment politicians in the eastern half of the country performed strongly in state-level elections as members of the German chancellor\u2019s so-called \u201ctraffic light coalition\u201d came up short.
