Imprisoned WNBA star Brittney Griner faces\u00a0nine years in a Russian penal colony\u00a0for attempting to bring a small amount of hashish oil onto a domestic flight with her Russian Premiere League team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Russian government\u00a0denied her appeal\u00a0for freedom last month.\u00a0Griner\u00a0received\u00a0more bad news this week; her lawyers told\u00a0People\u00a0magazine\u00a0that Griner will serve her sentence in a \u201cgeneral regime prison,\u201d which is considered the \u201charshest category of penal colonies for women.\u201dPeople<\/em>\u00a0notes this isn\u2019t an unusual sentence in Russia despite many getting sent to one of the 106 \u201cmixed gender low-security settlement penal colonies.\u201d Griner\u2019s drug sentence, however, means that she must serve in one of the 35 high-security prisons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s not an easy life in a settlement colony, but it\u2019s a lot harsher in a general regime colony,\u201d Natalia Filimonovna, from the NGO Russia Behind Bars, told People<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n President\u00a0Joe Biden, fresh off his party\u2019s surprisingly strong performance in\u00a0Tuesday\u2019s midterm elections, renewed his\u00a0\u201cdetermination\u201d to free Griner\u00a0earlier this week.
