{"id":19375,"date":"2014-12-28T16:33:51","date_gmt":"2014-12-28T14:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=19375"},"modified":"2014-12-28T16:33:51","modified_gmt":"2014-12-28T14:33:51","slug":"are-faulty-prenatal-tests-increasing-abortions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=19375","title":{"rendered":"Are Faulty Prenatal Tests Increasing Abortions?"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_19376\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19376\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/d9dea1b9f0631e5ad70d06faa1f15ece97d44b5c.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/d9dea1b9f0631e5ad70d06faa1f15ece97d44b5c-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"A troubling new investigation finds that patients \u2014 and some doctor \u2014 may be misinterpreting their prenatal screening results.\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/d9dea1b9f0631e5ad70d06faa1f15ece97d44b5c-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/d9dea1b9f0631e5ad70d06faa1f15ece97d44b5c.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A troubling new investigation finds that patients \u2014 and some doctor \u2014 may be misinterpreting their prenatal screening results.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Simple, non-invasive prenatal screenings have become a routine part of prenatal care.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">These screens can identify the possibility of genetic abnormalities \u2014 such as Edwards syndrome \u2014 early in the first trimester, allowing women to make informed decisions about how they wish to proceed with their pregnancies.<br \/>\nBut a troubling new investigation by Elizabeth Daley of the New England Center for Investigative Reporting, suggests that these screens can be faulty and have led women to terminate healthy pregnancies when they\u2019re faced with the idea of undergoing additional, and often more invasive, testing to absolutely confirm the diagnosis in their fetus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThe key is understanding the difference between a diagnostic test and a screening test,\u201d says Dale Bearman, MD, an OB-GYN and former chief of staff at Atlanta\u2019s Northside Hospital.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Bearman tells Yahoo Health that the results of a screening test should not lead to an immediate termination \u2014 \u201cthat\u2019s not the purpose of the test\u201d \u2014 and that screening tests are \u201cintended to reduce the need for risky diagnostic tests when the combination of noninvasive screening tests suggests reassuring information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Related: How My Miscarriage Changed My Next Pregnancy<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A study by Natera, the maker of the Panorama-brand prenatal screening test, concluded that, 22 women out of 356 who were told their fetuses were at high risk for some abnormality terminated the pregnancy without getting an invasive test to confirm the results.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cAs in every other situation, we cannot utilize a screen as a diagnostic test because it is more convenient and less risky,\u201d says Bearman. \u201dClearly this distinction [between screening tests and diagnostic tests] needs to be addressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">These screening tests, frequently not covered by insurance, can cost several thousands of dollars, offering DNA analysis that \u201creads\u201d the placental DNA present in the mother\u2019s on blood, thus allowing for a crude fetal chromosomal analysis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Daley, the researcher who conducted the months-long investigation, tells WebMD that \u201cthis is supposed to be a risk-based test, not a diagnostics test. It is supposed to tell the woman \u2026 you have a higher risk of (your baby) having this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Testing placental DNA, however, is not the same as testing fetal DNA, which is why, should a screening test come back positive, additional testing \u2014 ranging from amniocentesis to diagnostic ultrasound \u2014 is needed to confirm whether there is some kind of chromosomal defect present in the fetus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Down syndrome, for example, impacts chromosome 21, while Edward\u2019s syndrome, a rarer genetic disorder, effects chromosome 18. When considering the results of these screening tests, it is critical to remember that, as Daley says, \u201cthe rarer the condition in a population, the more false positives you are going to have.\u201d She also adds that the tests are more likely to be predictive in \u201chigh-risk\u201d populations (such as women of advanced maternal age) than in the general population.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Simple, non-invasive prenatal screenings have become a routine part of prenatal care.
