{"id":182582,"date":"2021-08-20T16:13:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-20T14:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=182582"},"modified":"2021-08-20T16:15:06","modified_gmt":"2021-08-20T14:15:06","slug":"toxic-algae-bloom-considered-in-deaths-of-california-family-pet-dog-found-in-remote-hiking-area","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=182582","title":{"rendered":"Toxic algae bloom considered in deaths of California family, pet dog found in remote hiking area"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Investigators are considering whether toxic algae blooms or other hazards may have contributed to the\u00a0deaths of a Northern California couple, their baby and the family dog on a remote hiking trail, authorities said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The area in the Sierra National Forest where the bodies were found on Tuesday had been treated as a hazmat site after concerns were raised about the deaths being linked to potentially toxic gases from old mines nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But the hazmat declaration was lifted Wednesday, and Mariposa County Sheriff Jeremy Briese said he didn\u2019t believe the mines were a factor, the\u00a0Fresno Bee\u00a0reported Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThis is a very unusual, unique situation,\u201d said Kristie Mitchell, a spokesperson for the sheriff\u2019s office. \u201cThere were no signs of trauma, no obvious cause of death. There was no suicide note.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">John Gerrish, his wife, Ellen Chung, their 1-year-old daughter, Miju, and their dog were all found dead on a hiking trail near Hite\u2019s Cove in the Sierra National Forest. A family friend had reported them missing Monday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The area around Hite\u2019s Cove was the site of a hard rock gold mining operation in the mid-19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The bodies were transported to the coroner\u2019s office in Mariposa for autopsies and toxicology exams, Mitchell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The State Water Resources Control Board said Thursday it was testing waterways in the area for any toxic algae blooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The couple were known to be avid hikers. Their friend, Mariposa real estate agent Sidney Radanovich, said Gerrish was a San Francisco-based software designer who, with his wife, \u201cfell in love with the Mariposa area\u201d and bought several homes there, a residence for themselves and rental investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThey were such a loving couple.
