{"id":177916,"date":"2021-04-11T22:46:42","date_gmt":"2021-04-11T20:46:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=177916"},"modified":"2021-04-11T22:46:43","modified_gmt":"2021-04-11T20:46:43","slug":"island-of-tanna-tribe-that-treated-prince-philip-as-a-god-now-expected-to-worship-charles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=177916","title":{"rendered":"Island of Tanna tribe that treated Prince Philip as a god now expected to worship Charles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\">Prince of Wales already has a shrine in one of the villages<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The\u00a0South Pacific\u00a0tribe that saw\u00a0Prince Philip\u00a0as a living god will likely turn to worship\u00a0Prince Charles, a leading anthropologist has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A group of villagers on the tiny island of Tanna in the Vanuatu archipelago believe the Duke of Edinburgh had descended from their spiritual ancestors and worshipped him, praying that he would one day return to bring prosperity to the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As news of his passing reaches the island, they will respond with dances and ritual wailing, along with a ceremonial drink, said Kirk Huffman, an anthropologist who is familiar with what is known as the Prince Philip Movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI imagine there will be some ritual wailing, some special dances. There will be a focus on the men drinking kava \u2013 it is the key to opening the door to the intangible world,\u201c Mr Huffman told the\u00a0<em>Telegraph<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cOn Tanna it is not drunk as a means of getting drunk. It connects the material world with the non-material world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/\u0641\u064a\u0644\u064a\u0628-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-177918\" width=\"656\" height=\"454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/\u0641\u064a\u0644\u064a\u0628-1.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/\u0641\u064a\u0644\u064a\u0628-1-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 656px) 100vw, 656px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When Prince Charles\u00a0visited\u00a0the island in 2018, he was appointed honorary chief and drank kava, a mixture of water and the crushed roots of the kava plant, from a coconut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Mr Huffman, who is honorary curator of Vanuatu\u2019s national museum, said one villager kept the coconut from which Charles drank and said he would build a shrine to it.\u201cSo a connection was made between Tanna and Charles,\u201d he said, \u201cI suspect the beliefs of the islanders will continue with Prince Charles.\u201dThe worship of Prince Philip is thought to have begun in 1950s or 1960s, but was bolstered after he visited Vanuatu in 1974 alongside the Queen. The movement is based in the villages of Yakel and Yaohnanen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cOne of the oarsmen taking them ashore was a chap from Tanna called Chief Jack,\u201d former Buckingham Palace spokesperson Dickie Arbiter told the\u00a0<em>New York Post<\/em>. \u201cHe thought Philip was a warrior from a long time ago who had come down from the mountains and gone off to England in search of a bride.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cFrom the believers\u2019 point of view, he is not English but from their island,\u201d Mr Huffman said. \u201cThe original spirit of which he is in the process of recycling is one of their own people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThey explain his light skin with a story that says he rolled on a coral reef and it shredded off his black skin and left him white,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Hopes that Prince Philip would one day return had already been dampened in 2017, when he stepped down from royal duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jack Malia, the village chief, said the Duke had promised he would one day return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cPrince Philip has said one day he will come and visit us,\u201d Mr Malia told&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>&nbsp;in 2017. \u201cWe still believe that he will come but if he doesn\u2019t come, the pictures that I am holding&#8230; it means nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIf he comes one day the people will not be poor, there will be no sickness, no debt and the garden will be growing very well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prince of Wales already has a shrine in one of the villages The\u00a0South Pacific\u00a0tribe that saw\u00a0Prince Philip\u00a0as a living god will likely turn to worship\u00a0Prince Charles, a leading anthropologist has said.
