New Delhi-India has kicked off the world\u2019s largest vaccination campaign to immunise more than 300 million people by this summer. About 3,000 sites have been opened across the country, and health officials promised that the number will grow in the coming weeks. More than 191, 000 were vaccinated on the first day. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rollout of the vaccine program is serving India\u2019s\nethical commitments to developing and poor nations, which have real concerns\nthat they are left to fight Covid-19 deadly disease with their bare-hands.  The government granted emergency approval to\ntwo vaccines \u2014 a locally manufactured version of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine\nand a vaccine called Covaxin, both sold at $2.75 a dose (the Pfizer vaccine, by\ncomparison, costs $19.50).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

AstraZeneca vaccine is being manufactured by Serum\nInstitute of India, the world\u2019s largest vaccine maker by volume. Covaxin is\ndeveloped by Bharat Biotech, an Indian pharmaceutical company. Neither the\nAstraZeneca vaccine nor the Bharat Biotech vaccine requires ultracold storage. The\nsecond-largest population in the world has a long track record of\nmass-producing vaccines at affordable prices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serum Institute has been assigned as a major supplier to\nthe Covax project, a global initiative backed by the World Health Organization\nto distribute vaccines equitably to poorer countries. Adar Poonawalla, the\nchief executive of Serum Institute, said the company would start delivering\ndoses to Covax by the end of this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world\u2019s largest scale of immunisation is described by Indian\nPrime Minister Narendra Modi as \u201cliving proof of India\u2019s talent.\u201d However, in a\ntelevised address on Sunday, Modi urged Indians to remain vigilant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

India managed the towering logistical feat of distributing\nvaccine doses across the country with a synchronized national launch. Marking\nit as a hard-fought win, Indian Health Minister Harsh Vardhan declared: \u201cWe are\nwinning the battle and eventually we will win this war against COVID-19 as we\nknow our enemy, its numbers and its proper whereabouts and we are prepared to\ndeal with any situation,\u201d noted the Minister. He asserted that the situation in\nthe country is improving. \u201cThrough a graded, pre-emptive and pro-active\napproach, the Central government is taking several steps along with the\nStates\/Union Territories for prevention, containment and management of\nCOVID-19. These are being regularly reviewed and monitored at the highest\nlevel,\u201d said the minister.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

India\u2019s health minister gave his assurances in this respect after visiting\nthe Trauma Centre of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to take stock\nof COVID-19 preparedness. \u201cThe situation is improving in India as Hotspot\nDistricts are moving towards becoming Non-Hotspot Districts,\u201d said the\nMinister. Maharashtra accounts for the highest number of fatalities, followed\nby Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and Andhra Pradesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first in line for vaccinations are 30 million\nhealth-care workers, soldiers and municipal employees. They\u2019ll receive\nvaccinations free of cost. The next stage is more ambitious: It will target\n270 million people over the age of 50 as well as those below 50 who have\nco-morbidities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Indian government has already made available sufficient quantities of\nPersonal Protective Equipment (PPEs) at the State level. \u201cNow we have around\n106 manufacturing units capable of making them in the country itself to meet\nthe increasing requirement in future. There are now 10 manufacturers of N-95\nmasks in the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, in collaboration with various research labs, the Indian government\nmanaged to boost the production of ventilators by domestic manufacturers.\nOrders have been placed for more than 59, 000 units through 9 manufacturers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the beginning, coronavirus cases\nin India happened due to the abroad connection rather than transmission within\nthe country. The first three infection cases occurred on 30th January and 3rd\nFebruary in Kerala as they returned from Wuhan China. Within a month later on\n3rd March, two more cases were reported where one patient had a travel history\nfrom Italy while the other in Hyderabad visited Dubai. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

India\u2019s long battle against\nCoronavirus began when the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) issued\ntravel advisory restrictions which were similar to the previous pandemics such\nas SARS, Ebola, and bubonic plague, including the imposition of self-quarantine\nrules for 14 days to all international travellers entering the country.\nAdditionally, travel visas were restricted until 15th April for other countries\nand on 16th<\/sup> March 2020, MoHFW proposed various interventions such as\nsocial distancing of 1\u202fm to avoid\/decrease the rate and extent of disease\ntransmission in a community which eventually leads to decreasing in a spread,\nmorbidity, and mortality due to the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 22nd March, Prime Minister\nNarendra Modi encouraged people to follow 14\u202fh of Janata curfew in India. On\n24th March first phase of 21 days lockdown started in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due\nto the growing number of infestation from COVID-19, on 14th April, Indian\ngovernment declared an extended 2nd phase lockdown till 3rd May which was\nfurther lengthened till 17th May and later imposed till 31st May. To make the lockdown and social distancing effective,\nIndia also levied the quarantine law under the Epidemic Disease Act, 1897. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This 123-year-old legislation allows\na state\/country to inspect people traveling by railways, ships (air travel was\nnot an option at that time when this law was created), and segregate suspects\nin hospitals, under temporary accommodations, or otherwise to prevent the\nspread of dangerous pandemic disease.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
