State public health officials say they will begin to vaccinate the next priority group of Iowans against the novel coronavirus by Feb. 1, shifting from front-line health care workers to other populations that face high risk for exposure to and severe illness from the virus. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Populations that fall in the Phase 1B of the state\u2019s vaccine distribution plan include Iowans aged 75 and older, school and child care staff, first responders and other at-risk groups.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this news from the Iowa \nDepartment of Public Health still leaves questions unanswered for many \nIowans eager to receive a vaccine. There\u2019s still much that\u2019s unknown on \nhow this large population will be prioritized, based on the current \nvaccine supply. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the logistics of how and where Iowans can obtain the two-dose series still is unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even local county public \nhealth departments, which are tasked with coordinating distribution for \nits jurisdictions, have no details to share with residents. The limited \nvaccine supply has slowed the local effort to vaccinate first-priority \ngroups, making the projected timeline difficult to determine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iowa\u2019s vaccine effort, which \nstarted in mid-December, currently is focused on front-line health care \nworkers, and staff and residents of long-term care facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVaccine supplies are arriving in our state and counties very slowly,\u201d Heather Meador, Linn County Public Health clinical services supervisor, said this past week. \u201c \u2026 Without an increase in vaccine supplies, we will not be able to offer all individuals identified in Phase 1A and 1B immunizations as quickly as anyone would like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what we do know so far:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Schoolteachers (Pre-K through grade 12), early childhood education workers and others who work with at-risk children<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 First responders, including firefighters, police officers, and dependent adult-abuse and child welfare social workers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Correctional facility staff and incarcerated people in state and local facilities<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Staff and residents in \ncongregate living settings that include shelters, behavioral health \ntreatment centers, sober living homes and detention centers. (College \nresidence halls are not included.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Food, agriculture, distribution and manufacturing workers in congregate settings that don\u2019t allow for social distancing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Inspectors responsible for health, life and safety<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Government officials and staff engaged in state business at the Iowa Capitol during the legislative session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What about people ages 65-74 or with underlying medical conditions? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At\n this time, Iowans aged 65 to 74 are not eligible for a vaccine under \nthe state\u2019s plan. Iowa\u2019s guidelines differ from federal recommendations,\n which say a vaccine should be offered to people 65 and older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there is a vaccine \nshortage, state guidelines would prioritize 50 percent of vaccine \nallocations to the priority age group \u201cand individuals of all ages with \nco-morbidities.\u201d The remaining 50 percent would be dedicated to those \nmost at risk for exposure or severe illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly Garcia, Iowa \nDepartment of Public Health interim director, told legislators Tuesday \nthat once supply increases, the state \u201cwill quickly pivot\u201d to other \ngroups, including those 65 and older and those of all ages with chronic \nhealth conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is there a sign-up list for a vaccine?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At\n this time, no. State and local entities do not have a registry or list \nwhere Iowans can sign up for a vaccine as other states are doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local public health \nofficials indicated their offices, as well as local clinics and \npharmacies, are being inundated with calls from Iowans wondering when \nthey can expect to receive the vaccine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson County Public Health\n has had more calls in recent weeks than it has received throughout the \npandemic, said Sam Jarvis, community health manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Linn County Public Health\u2019s \nMeador said local doctor\u2019s offices, pharmacies or public health offices \ncan\u2019t provide a specific date or timeline when individuals can expect to\n receive a vaccine. These entities have no information on when vaccine \nshipments will arrive or how many doses they\u2019ll receive at a given time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where can I get a vaccine? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\n state health department said it will release more information on this \ntopic soon. It\u2019s expected that doses will be available at the hundreds \nof doctor\u2019s offices, clinics, retail pharmacies and other facilities \nacross the state that have signed on to administer the vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 100 health care providers in Linn County alone have signed on, according to local officials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Essential workers may have \ntheir shots coordinated through their employers. Meador said county \npublic health departments will match these workplaces with \u201ca vaccine \nhost\u201d to coordinate administration of doses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These employees may have to travel to the vaccine host\u2019s location, or the host may give shots at the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How long will I have to wait until I get a vaccine?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

State public health officials told state lawmakers this past week they plan to start administering vaccines for Phase 1B populations by Feb. 1 at the latest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the process will take some time, warned Ken Sharp, the IDPH official in charge of the COVID-19 vaccine effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need everyone to \nunderstand that not everybody\u2019s going to get their vaccine by Feb. 2. \nThey\u2019re not even going to get their vaccine necessarily by the end of \nFebruary,\u201d Sharp said Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

State officials have not \ngiven any indication how they plan to prioritize Phase 1B, a much \nbroader population than those that qualify under 1A. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They did say the effort is likely to take at least several weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Linn County Public Health \nofficials said this past week that, based on the current supply of \nCOVID-19 vaccines, it could take several months before everyone in Phase\n 1A and 1B is vaccinated. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
