Almost a year after the Indian government cancelled constitutional article 370, which granted \u2018special status\u2019 to Jammu and Kashmir, several development and investment projects have been completed to turn a new chapter in the territory and help the people realise ambitions they have kept alive for seven decades.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, filmmakers in Bollywood, Tollywood and other regions\nare not lagging behind; they are preparing to shoot movies, which could help\npromote the territory regionally and internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The unprecedented development and investment drive in the territory was\nannounced by Prime Minister Modi in a televised speech he delivered to the\nnation in August last year to mark his government\u2019s historic decision, which\nabrogated \u2018special status\u2019 in Jammu and Kashmir. In his speech, Modi promised\nthat his government would \u2018usher the region to a new era of economic prosperity\nand development.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modi said that the abrogation \u2018has broken one of the political taboos of\nthe 20th century\u2019. Modi won a landslide victory in general elections held in\nthis largest democracy in the world in May the same year. Modi\u2019s victory\nreinforced him as the country\u2019s most formidable politician in decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Indian government is confident that the implementation of investment\nand development programmes would remarkably boost its efforts to stem terrorism\nand violence in the region. .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of major projects, which have been inaugurated in Srinagar is the\ntwo-tube flyover from Jehangir Chowk to Rambagh in the city. The project to\nconstruct a length of 2.40 kms in four-lane with an aggregate length of four\nkms including accesses, was started in 2013. The project was finally thrown\nopen to the public in August 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, the revetment along Jhelum riverfront, which was started in\n2015, has been instrumental in mitigating the flood proneness of Srinagar city\nwhich usually witnessed floods because of overflow over embankments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing urban population, the government completed a project planned\nto solve the major issue of water logging in various areas of Srinagar. The\nproject has been instrumental to provide relief to at least 21,000 households\nincluding commercial areas of Lal Chowk and Indra Nagar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, for the development of sports infrastructure in the city,\nseven projects were undertaken. The infrastructure has been instrumental in the\nengagement of youth for sports activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modi listed the benefits that Jammu and Kashmir citizens would enjoy\nthat their territory has joined the Union. \u201cThere will be an immediate review\nof government employees and police in the state,\u201d the Indian prime minister\nsaid in his August speech last year. \u201cEverybody will now enjoy the same\nbenefits as other government employees posted in other states of India,\u201d he\nsaid. He asserted that central laws and schemes would now benefit minority\ncommunities in Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to augment the higher education infrastructure, the government\nbegan 19 projects in various degree colleges of Srinagar. Most of the projects\nhave been completed. The aim of this project was to enhance the intake capacity\nof these colleges with special reference to professional courses. In his\nhistoric speech, Modi promised Kashmiris that education would prosper in their\nstate after the scrapping of Article 370.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty-five schools were taken to develop as model schools in Srinagar\ndistrict to compete with private schools in the primary sector and to enhance\nthe learning outcome in government schools. The project was started, completed\nand commissioned in 2019-20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government also improved the connectivity network of Srinagar by\ncompleting the long-pending five bridges within the city. The project has been\ninstrumental in addressing the connectivity problems of various areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government has given priority to establish quarantine centres to\nfight the Covid-19 pandemic. Presently, around 2,600 bed-capacity has been\naugmented at various locations such as Indoor Stadium, Hyderpora Warehouse,\nSanat Nagar Marriage hall, IMPA Hostel, Hajj House, Srinagar and in eight\nhostels of the Government Degree College.
