{"id":154839,"date":"2019-09-13T01:57:09","date_gmt":"2019-09-12T23:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=154839"},"modified":"2019-09-13T01:57:12","modified_gmt":"2019-09-12T23:57:12","slug":"us-woman-left-semi-comatose-after-using-mercury-tainted-anti-aging-cream","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=154839","title":{"rendered":"US Woman Left Semi-Comatose After Using Mercury-Tainted Anti-Aging Cream"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>A 47-year-old woman is now bed-bound in a semi-comatose state after slathering her skin with an anti-aging skin care cream that doctors say was contaminated with high amounts of methylmercury, a highly poisonous form of mercury.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One family from Sacramento, California, is grieving after their mother\u00a0became ill\u00a0and lost virtually all motor functions due to a mercury poisoning that experts say is the first of its kind in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jay, the California woman\u2019s son, told local Sacramento news outlet KTXL that his mother quickly became sick at the end of June and was taken to the hospital for a week after using a special kind of Pond&#8217;s Rejuveness Anti-Wrinkle Cream that she had been importing from Jalisco, Mexico, through a friend for 12 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Though she had been using the cream without any issues for over a decade, doctors were eventually able to identify this recent batch was tainted with methylmercury, a form of mercury that is toxic to the central and peripheral nervous systems<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe shouldn&#8217;t have any mercury in our body,\u201d a public health educator with the Sacramento County Health Department told KTXL. \u201cBut if you did, you would want it less than five [parts per million]. Hers was over 2,600 parts per million.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.img.sputniknews.com\/images\/\/107678\/83\/1076788327.png\" alt=\"NUEVA Pond\u2019s Rejuveness Anti-Wrinkle Daily Moisturizer. In fact, the woman\u2019s son described the enhancement mixed into the formula as \u201chelpful product\u201d prior to the recent tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">During her time at the hospital, Jay\u2019s mother quickly began to lose control of her speech, motor function and self-awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cYou know, she doesn&#8217;t speak, and we&#8217;re not really sure if she&#8217;s fully focused looking at us and stuff. She can&#8217;t get up, stand, walk or none of that,\u201d Jay explained to KTXL. \u201cShe&#8217;s just kind of bed-bound.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Pond\u2019s, which has nearly 10 million followers on Facebook, has not issued an official statement concerning the presence of\u00a0mercury\u00a0in their products. However, user Jan Jones Gross\u00a0openly questioned\u00a0their practices, asking them, \u201cHow could you use Mercury in your [Rejuveness] dangering women, so little regard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cHi Jan, POND\u2019S only designs, manufactures and clears for sale products that are safe for consumers.
