{"id":154160,"date":"2019-09-06T15:21:27","date_gmt":"2019-09-06T13:21:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=154160"},"modified":"2019-09-06T15:21:31","modified_gmt":"2019-09-06T13:21:31","slug":"facebook-google-antitrust-probes-pending-as-tech-giants-face-increased-federal-scrutiny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=154160","title":{"rendered":"Facebook, Google Antitrust Probes Pending as Tech Giants Face Increased Federal Scrutiny"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>The US Justice Department recently launched a sweeping antitrust investigation into big technology companies, seeking to determine whether their online platforms have \u201churt competition, suppressed innovation or otherwise harmed consumers.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">State attorneys general are formally launching separate antitrust probes into Facebook and Alphabet&#8217;s Google unit, according to people familiar with the matter, reports&nbsp;<em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Set to be announced at a news conference outside the US Supreme Court on 9 September, the Google probe is seen as bringing more pressure to bear on the tech giants, which are already in federal crosshairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The investigation, led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, fortified by a bipartisan group comprising some three dozen state attorneys general, will examine Google&#8217;s impact on digital advertising markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A separate investigation spearheaded by New York Attorney General Letitia James is targeting Facebook, the Journal reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe attorneys general involved have concerns over the control of personal data by large tech companies and will hold them accountable for anticompetitive practices that endanger privacy and consumer data,&#8221; said Letitia James.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Facebook and Google have yet to comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">                                                 US tech giants in the crosshairs<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The news comes as the\u00a0US tech giants are under increased federal scrutiny\u00a0in the wake of a series of scandals that compromised users&#8217; privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Facebook agreed to pay a record $5 billion on the 23 July to resolve a US investigation into years of privacy violations, a settlement that also increased the onus on the company&#8217;s board of directors\u2019 to protect users\u2019 data, according to a Federal Trade Commission statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"blob:https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/b6b1ecb4-525c-4957-9dac-325914e27d26\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><em><strong>Mark Zuckerberg pauses while testifying on Capitol Hill in Washington<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The FTC probe stemmed from the March 2018 disclosure that the Cambridge Analytica consulting firm improperly obtained data on tens of millions of Facebook users, with\u00a0the scandal dealing a blow to Facebook\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a move\u00a0targeting online giants Facebook, Google and Amazon, the US Justice Department announced on 23 July that it had launched a wide-ranging antitrust investigation into the companies to probe if their platforms have \u201churt competition, suppressed innovation or otherwise harmed consumers\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWithout the discipline of meaningful market-based competition, digital platforms may act in ways that are not responsive to consumer demands.
