\u00a0U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed Iran and maritime security with rich Gulf Arab allies during a trip to the region on Monday after President Donald Trump called off a military strike to retaliate for Tehran\u2019s downing of a U.S. drone.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A senior U.S. State Department official said that the United States is building a coalition with its allies to protect Gulf shipping lanes by having \u201ceyes on all shipping\u201d, following recent attacks on oil tankers that Washington blamed on Iran.<\/p>\n

Pompeo arrived in the United Arab Emirates after meeting with King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Saudi Arabia where talks covered protection for ships in the Gulf.<\/p>\n

\u201cFreedom of navigation is paramount,\u201d Pompeo tweeted from the Saudi city of Jeddah.<\/p>\n

The senior U.S. official told reporters en route to Abu Dhabi that Pompeo and the U.S. Navy is building a \u201cSentinel\u201d program for \u201cproactive deterrence\u201d. He said a coalition of nations would provide both material and financial contributions, but did not name the countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the Iranians are doing by shooting down American drones, shooting at other drones in the region not even necessarily over the Gulf, anywhere, is to prevent us from having eyes on them,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n

A second U.S. official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that the plan aimed to see U.S. partners providing the majority of ships that would be positioned in intervals in the Gulf of Oman or the Strait of Hormuz, keeping watch.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not in operation (yet) but it\u2019s something we\u2019re looking at with our partners,\u201d the official said, describing the concept.<\/p>\n

Tehran has denied any involvement in the explosive blasts that have hit six vessels, including two Saudi oil tankers, near the Strait of Hormuz, through which almost a fifth of the world\u2019s oil passes.<\/p>\n

The U.S. official said the deterrents include cameras, binoculars and ships, including from the United States.<\/p>\n

MOBILIZING ALLIES<\/h3>\n

In an apparent sign of how quickly the United States has mobilized diplomatic efforts as the confrontation escalates, Pompeo thanked King Salman for meeting on \u201csuch short notice\u201d.<\/p>\n

Pompeo and Prince Mohammed reiterated that the \u201ctwo countries stand side by side in confronting the hostile Iranian activities and in combating terrorism\u201d, the Saudi media ministry said.<\/p>\n

The United States has protected the strait for decades with its naval Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that other countries, including China and Japan, should protect their own ships there.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be military ships from foreign countries, from a broad coalition of countries who participate in this. I don\u2019t think they\u2019re escorting. I think they\u2019re observing,\u201d the U.S. official said.<\/p>\n

It was not clear what role Saudi Arabia and the UAE would play in the coalition. Pompeo is due to meet with Abu Dhabi\u2019s crown prince.<\/p>\n

Relations between longtime foes Iran and the United States have deteriorated since Trump withdrew Washington a year ago from a 2015 accord that curbed Tehran\u2019s nuclear program in exchange for easing sanctions.<\/p>\n

Tensions have flared following the tankers attacks, Iran\u2019s downing of the drone last week, and repeated attacks on Saudi airports and oil installations by Yemen\u2019s Iran-aligned Houthis.<\/p>\n

KASHOGGI NOT DISCUSSED<\/h3>\n

Pompeo did not discuss last year\u2019s murder of U.S.-based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi when he met with Saudi Arabia\u2019s king on Monday, the senior State Department official said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt did not\u201d come up, the official said, and could not confirm if the case had been raised with the crown prince.<\/p>\n

A U.N. report last week called for the crown prince and other senior officials to be investigated given credible evidence against them.<\/p>\n
