In a first, Saudi prosecutors are seeking to behead a female activist for participating in anti-government protests, according to rights campaigners.<\/strong><\/p>\n

None of the charges against Israa al-Ghomgham are for violent acts, according to Human Rights Watch Saudi Arabia researcher Hiba Zayadin.<\/strong>
\n“It is unprecedented that they would seek the death penalty for a woman,” Zayadin told NBC News on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Saudi Arabian officials were not immediately available to comment on the case.<\/p>\n

The kingdom’s public prosecutor behind the charges reports directly to King Salman and “by proxy” his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, she added.<\/p>\n

Ghomgham is among five Shiite Muslim activists from Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province currently on trial and facing the death penalty in a secretive terrorism court, according to Human Rights Watch.<\/p>\n

According to Amnesty International, the public prosecutor called for 29-year-old Ghomgham and other defendants to be beheaded. Most people executed in the Gulf kingdom are beheaded with a sword, according to Reprieve, an international charity focused on the death penalty.<\/p>\n

The charges against the group that Ghomgham is part of include incitement to protest, chanting slogans hostile to the regime, attempting to inflame public opinion, and providing moral support to rioters.<\/p>\n

The crown prince, who is widely seen as the power behind the throne, has been on an intense international public relations campaign to tout the kingdom’s efforts to transform the Saudi economy and return the deeply conservative society to “moderate” Islam.
\nWomen have been granted permission to drive and more freely work outside the home, and the country’s fearsome religious police have been defanged.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump and Jared Kushner, his son-in-law and senior adviser, have embraced the crown prince as a close and crucial partner in the administration’s Middle East strategy. Trump went to Saudi Arabia \u2014 an absolute monarchy where political parties and protests are banned \u2014 in his first foreign trip as president.<\/p>\n

But a recent wave of detentions of intellectuals, clerics, journalists and women’s rights campaigners has alarmed rights workers around the world as well as some Saudi allies. Canada\u2019s call in early August for the immediate release of Saudi women’s rights activists within days spiraled into a full-blown diplomatic crisis.
\nRights groups worry that the execution of a woman for non-violent offenses would set a precedent.<\/p>\n

Zayadin added that Ghomgham’s case \u201cprovided a window\u201d to an intensifying crackdown that had already swept up peaceful women\u2019s rights campaigners.<\/p>\n

Samah Hadid, Amnesty’s Middle East director of campaigns, said the death sentence would “send a horrifying message that other activists could be targeted in the same way for their peaceful protest and human rights activism.”<\/p>\n

The prosecution of Ghomgham was reported earlier this week by Berlin-based European-Saudi Organisation for Human Rights and ALQST, a London-based rights group.<\/p>\n

The charges are related to Ghomgham’s involvement in huge demonstrations in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province \u2014 where most of the country’s Shiites live \u2014 that started in 2011.<\/p>\n

She was arrested in December 2015 with her husband, Moussa al-Hashem, who is also charged. Their next court date is scheduled for<\/p>\n

Shiites have long complained of widespread discrimination by Sunni Muslim authorities, who deny unfairly cracking down on the minority.<\/p>\n

The Saudi government also accuses arch-rival Iran of being behind unrest.<\/p>\n
