Compared to What: Pentagon Says \u20182000%\u2019 Rise in Russian Trolls After Airstrikes<\/h1>\n

Saturday morning\u2019s missile attacks by the US, France and UK on Syrian installations allegedly used in the production<\/strong> of chemical weapons has compelled Moscow to retaliate in support of Bashar al-Assad\u2019s government in the form of \u201cRussian trolls,\u201d claims the Pentagon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Even though Russia has not indicated plans to\u00a0do so, Pentagon spokesperson Dana White with\u00a0a straight face told reporters on\u00a0Saturday that, as\u00a0a result of\u00a0the airstrikes, there has been a “2000-percent increase” in\u00a0Russian trolling on\u00a0the internet.<\/p>\n

“The Russian disinformation campaign has already begun,” White asserted without\u00a0provided context for\u00a0the number, declaring that “there has been a 2,000-percent increase in\u00a0Russian trolls in\u00a0the last 24 hours,” cited by\u00a0Gizmodo.<\/p>\n

Although it is possible that a troll army in\u00a0Russia not only exists but\u00a0quickly picked up\u00a0their metaphorical axes and swung to\u00a0work responding online to\u00a0the attacks on\u00a0Syria this weekend. But what is unclear is where the White House got its “2,000-percent” statistic and what the significance of\u00a0that number indicates.<\/p>\n

Does an “increase in\u00a0Russian trolls” include posts tracked back to\u00a0Russian state-owned media? Or does the seemingly arbitrary number refer to\u00a0an increased number of\u00a0posts? Is it a measure of\u00a0impact or engagement in\u00a0the posts?<\/p>\n

Or is it a figure chosen because it rolls off\u00a0the tongue like\u00a0the US missiles that rained down\u00a0on Syrian infrastructure over\u00a0the weekend?<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Tim Hartford, host of\u00a0the statistics podcast More or Less, the \u20182000′ figure, while easy to\u00a0digest, does not hold up\u00a0to closer scrutiny.<\/p>\n

“I think there’s a basic reality check you can do on\u00a0most statistical claims,” Hartford said, cited by\u00a0Gizmodo.\u00a0“You can just ask: Does that sound reasonable?\u2026 OK, so first, if you’ve been given a number, just ask: compared to\u00a0what?\u2026 The second thing is-what does the statistic actually refer to?” he added.<\/p>\n

Others agreed, including researcher Clint Watts at\u00a0the Center for\u00a0Cyber and Homeland Security at\u00a0George Washington University, who told Buzzfeed: “I’m not convinced on\u00a0this bot thing.”<\/p>\n

“They are not all in\u00a0Russia. We don’t even think they’re all commanded in\u00a0Russia-at all. We think some of\u00a0them are legitimately passionate people that are just really into\u00a0promoting Russia.”<\/p>\n

“There are certain times when it does give you great insights,” suggested Watts, adding, “but it’s not a one-time, I look at\u00a0it for\u00a0five seconds and write a newspaper article and then that’s it. That doesn’t give you any context about\u00a0it.”<\/p>\n

The US Defense Intelligence Agency wrote last year that “weaponization of\u00a0information is a key aspect of\u00a0Russia’s strategy and is employed in\u00a0time of\u00a0peace, crisis, and war.”<\/p>\n

The report also claimed that “Russian trolls,” via\u00a0the shadowy institutions such as\u00a0the notorious Internet Research Agency\u00a0\u2014 a purported Kremlin-backed group\u00a0\u2014 post propaganda in\u00a0comment sections of\u00a0social media.<\/p>\n

In a Saturday statement, US Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) noted that “the fog of\u00a0war will not be limited to\u00a0our situation rooms and battlefields,” referring to\u00a0the rise in\u00a0the importance of\u00a0information as\u00a0a conflict actor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
