Pakistani Defense Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan has discussed with Sputnik the issues of Moscow-Islamabad cooperation and the purchases of Russian hardware by Pakistan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Purchases of\u00a0Su-35 Jets, Air Defense Systems and\u00a0T-90 Tanks<\/strong><\/p>\n

MOSCOW (Sputnik) \u2013 Khurram Dastgir Khan confirmed to\u00a0Sputnik that Islamabad was in\u00a0talks with\u00a0Moscow on\u00a0the issue of\u00a0purchasing air defense systems, adding that Pakistan was interested in\u00a0such weapons.<\/p>\n

“Air defense system is a different kind of\u00a0weapon we are interested. We are very much interested in\u00a0a very wide range of\u00a0the Russian weapons technology. We are in\u00a0negotiations [on air defense systems] and once we conclude negotiations, we will be able to\u00a0announce them,” Khan said in\u00a0an interview.<\/p>\n

Pakistan and Russia may reach an agreement on\u00a0Islamabad purchasing Russian Su-35 jets “in the next few years,” the talks on\u00a0the issue are in\u00a0their early stages,Khan told Sputnik.<\/p>\n

Last February, a high-ranking military official in\u00a0Pakistan told Sputnik that Islamabad had no plans to\u00a0buy the Su-35.<\/p>\n

“Concerning fighter aircraft Su-35: may be in\u00a0the next few years we will be able to\u00a0reach that point, we are in\u00a0the beginning of\u00a0negotiations now,” the minister said answering a corresponding question.<\/p>\n

Pakistan is interested in\u00a0acquiring Russian T-90 tanks as\u00a0a long-term commitment instead of\u00a0a single purchase, Pakistani Defense Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan told Sputnik in\u00a0an interview on\u00a0Thursday.<\/p>\n

“We are interested in\u00a0tanks T-90 and it is not going to\u00a0be a one-time purchase but\u00a0it is going to\u00a0be a long-term commitment,” Khan said.<\/p>\n

Situation in\u00a0Afghanistan<\/strong><\/p>\n

Both Islamabad and Moscow are interested in\u00a0a stable and democratic Afghanistan as\u00a0it will positively contribute to\u00a0security in\u00a0Central Asia, the minister said.<\/p>\n

“We respect Afghanistan’s sovereignty. Stability in\u00a0Afghanistan is important for\u00a0Pakistan to\u00a0be able to\u00a0develop its own prosperous future, to\u00a0access to\u00a0the Russian market, for\u00a0example, by\u00a0land route. Democratic and stable Afghanistan is in\u00a0deep the interest of\u00a0both Russia and Pakistan,” Khan said.<\/p>\n

Pakistan supports Russia’s efforts to\u00a0bring stability and peace to\u00a0the region and called on\u00a0other regional and global powers to\u00a0jointly devise a plan to\u00a0end violence and defeat terrorism in\u00a0Afghanistan, according to\u00a0the official.<\/p>\n

“We are supporting the Russian regional approach to\u00a0Afghanistan and we hope that not only Russia but\u00a0also China, Iran and of\u00a0course the United States can sit together at\u00a0the table and devise a way in\u00a0which we can achieve internal peace and reconciliation within\u00a0Afghanistan,” he added.<\/p>\n

The minister also praised a new approach by\u00a0the Afghan leadership when it comes to\u00a0ending the prolonged conflict in\u00a0the country.<\/p>\n

“One positive step that has happened recently is a genuine approach by\u00a0President [Ashraf] Ghani when he had said that he no longer wants to\u00a0win the war, but\u00a0to end the conflict. To win the war was militarist American approach but\u00a0now the Afghan approach is closer to\u00a0Pakistan’s position on\u00a0the matter. Pakistan’s highest priority regarding Afghanistan is to\u00a0have a peaceful democratic stable neighbor,” Khan underlined.<\/p>\n

Afghanistan has long been suffering from\u00a0political, social and security instability due to\u00a0the activity of\u00a0the Taliban radical movement and the Daesh* terrorist group. To address this issue, Moscow has hosted a number of\u00a0conferences to\u00a0achieve peace in\u00a0the war-ravaged country.<\/p>\n

Islamabad, Moscow Agreed to\u00a0Enhance Defense, Intelligence Cooperation<\/strong><\/p>\n

Islamabad looks forward to\u00a0expanding defense cooperation with\u00a0Russia in\u00a0all areas, including military training, procuring equipment and sharing intelligence, Pakistani Defense Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan told Sputnik in\u00a0an interview on\u00a0Thursday.<\/p>\n

“In the defense field, we signed a historical unprecedented Pakistan-Russia defense agreement in\u00a02014. As a result, we have been able to\u00a0conduct joint exercises, Pakistan has purchased Russian helicopters Mi-35 and now we are looking at\u00a0much wider range of\u00a0defense cooperation. In terms of\u00a0training, Pakistani officers are coming to\u00a0Russia and Russian officers are going to\u00a0the Pakistani facilities for\u00a0training. We are also now discussing a wider range of\u00a0military exercises, we are looking at\u00a0a wider range of\u00a0military equipment and intelligence sharing,” Khan said on\u00a0the sidelines of\u00a0the Moscow Conference on\u00a0International Security (MCIS).<\/p>\n

The official commended the current level of\u00a0defense industry cooperation, noting that in\u00a0the future Islamabad hopes to\u00a0expand the variety of\u00a0military equipment sold by\u00a0Russia to\u00a0Pakistan.<\/p>\n

“We are looking towards\u00a0a great future in\u00a0certain areas, in\u00a0which Russia has excellent expertise, such as\u00a0the tanks and air defense systems,” Khan noted.<\/p>\n

Even though Pakistan and Russia had differences in\u00a0the past\u00a0on the Afghan crisis, the countries have now achieved mutual understanding on\u00a0regional and international issues, according to\u00a0the minister.<\/p>\n

“Of course we have a history of\u00a0Afghan war in\u00a0which we have been on\u00a0the opposite\u00a0sides but\u00a0now as\u00a0a second decade of\u00a0the 21st century ends, we will be able to\u00a0look at\u00a0world realities with\u00a0a different eye and I am delighted to\u00a0say that Pakistan and Russia are largely in\u00a0agreement on\u00a0major international issues like\u00a0Afghanistan, like\u00a0fighting drug trafficking, situation in\u00a0the Middle East. We are now looking now at\u00a0almost all aspects of\u00a0defense and there is excellent goodwill between\u00a0our leadership,” Khan underlined.The official went on\u00a0to say that Islamabad is grateful to\u00a0Russia for\u00a0supporting its accession to\u00a0the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).<\/p>\n

The SCO is a political, economic and military intergovernmental organization founded by\u00a0China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.
