A hazardous chemical leak recently detected in one of Siberia\u2019s many lakes reportedly poses a serious threat to a “closed city” nearby.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Local authorities have detected high levels of\u00a0hazardous chemicals in\u00a0Sazonovo Lake in\u00a0the vicinity of\u00a0the closed city of\u00a0Ozersk, the birthplace of\u00a0the Soviet nuclear weapons program, with\u00a0the contamination likely originating from\u00a0a nearby penal colony, according to\u00a0Russian media reports.<\/p>\n

The spill was detected by\u00a0employees of\u00a0the local water department who determined that the level of\u00a0polychlorinated biphenyl contamination in\u00a0the lake exceeds the norm by\u00a0430,000 times.The city administration has already requested the regional government to\u00a0form a special committee and investigate the cause of\u00a0the lake\u2019s contamination, as\u00a0this particular body of\u00a0water is directly linked to\u00a0Irtyash Lake which serves as\u00a0the primary source of\u00a0drinking water for\u00a0Ozersk.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0one of\u00a0the experts, this is a serious problem for\u00a0the region as\u00a0the contaminants have no half-life period and can only be removed via\u00a0high-temperature combustion.<\/p>\n
