US President Donald Trump has confirmed his intention to pull the country’s troops from Syria, explaining that the US military presence on Syria’s soil has benefited other countries more than Washington itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Our primary mission in\u00a0terms of\u00a0that was getting rid of\u00a0ISIS [Daesh]. We’ve almost completed that task and we’ll be making a decision very quickly in\u00a0coordination with\u00a0others, as\u00a0to what we’ll do.\u00a0Saudi Arabia is very interested in\u00a0our decision,” Trump stated during\u00a0a press conference with\u00a0the heads of\u00a0the three Baltic states. “I want to\u00a0get out. I want to\u00a0bring our troops home.”<\/p>\n

The president specified that he would consult with\u00a0the US-led coalition allies on\u00a0the military withdrawal, aimed, as\u00a0he claimed, to\u00a0rebuild the US.<\/p>\n

US media reported on\u00a0Friday that Trump has ordered the suspension of\u00a0more than $200 million in\u00a0funds for\u00a0recovery efforts in\u00a0Syria.<\/p>\n

The statement follows Trump’s previous announcement, made on\u00a0April 29, pledging to\u00a0allow a United States’ withdrawal from\u00a0Syria “very soon” and “let the other people take care of\u00a0it” instead. Trump’s surprising decision contradicted previous comments coming from\u00a0his administration, including senior Pentagon and State Department officials, saying that American troops would maintain an open-ended presence in\u00a0Syria.<\/p>\n

However, a contradictory position has been voiced in\u00a0response to\u00a0this statement by\u00a0Bret McGurk, Trump’s special envoy to\u00a0the US-led coalition, who stated that the coalition’s mission in\u00a0Syria is not over\u00a0and the US would stay in\u00a0the country until\u00a0the terrorist group is defeated.<\/p>\n

“In terms of\u00a0our campaign in\u00a0Syria, we are in\u00a0Syria to\u00a0fight ISIS [Daesh],” McGurk said during\u00a0remarks at\u00a0the United States Institute of\u00a0Peace in\u00a0Washington, DC. “That is our mission and that mission isn’t over\u00a0and we are going to\u00a0complete that mission.”<\/p>\n

The US has been maintaining a military presence on\u00a0Syrian soil since\u00a02014, leading a coalition of\u00a0allies in\u00a0fighting against\u00a0Daesh, without\u00a0either a UN mandate or the Syrian government’s authorization.\u00a0Damascus\u00a0has consistently called the US military presence in\u00a0the country “illegal.”<\/p>\n

*Daesh, also known as\u00a0ISIL\/ISIS\/IS, is a terrorist group banned in\u00a0Russia and many other countries<\/em><\/p>\n

Relations With Russia, Nord Stream 2<\/strong><\/p>\n

The US president has also touched upon\u00a0the strained relations with\u00a0Moscow, speaking during\u00a0the press-conference.<\/p>\n

“I think we\u2019ll be able to\u00a0have great dialogue, I hope,” Trump said during\u00a0a briefing alongside\u00a0the presidents of\u00a0Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. “Nobody has been tougher on\u00a0Russia than\u00a0I have\u2026 With that being said I think I could have a very good relationship with [Russian] President [Vladimir] Putin, I think. It\u2019s possible I won\u2019t, and you will know about\u00a0it.”<\/p>\n

He went on\u00a0saying that it was not right for\u00a0Germany to\u00a0spend billions on\u00a0energy from\u00a0Russia while failing to\u00a0meet its two percent-of-GDP commitment to\u00a0NATO.<\/p>\n

“NATO is taking in\u00a0billions of\u00a0dollars more because of\u00a0me\u2026 Many of\u00a0the countries were not paying, and even now Germany is paying one percent, and they are not even paying a full one percent,” Trump said. “Germany hooks up\u00a0a pipeline into\u00a0Russia where Germany is going to\u00a0be paying billions of\u00a0dollars for\u00a0energy into\u00a0Russia. And I am saying what\u2019s going on\u00a0with that? How come Germany is paying vast amounts of\u00a0money to\u00a0Russia where they hook up\u00a0a pipeline? That\u2019s not right.”<\/p>\n

The Nord Stream 2 AG, the operator of\u00a0the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, received all permits from\u00a0Germany necessary for\u00a0the construction of\u00a0the pipeline, the company\u2019s press service said on\u00a0Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Germany has repeatedly said the project is a commercial and economic enterprise, and that countries must abide by\u00a0this principle.<\/p>\n

Earlier in\u00a0March, a group of\u00a039 US senators urged the US Treasury Department to\u00a0try blocking the construction of\u00a0the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and consider imposing sanctions on\u00a0companies involved in\u00a0the project.<\/p>\n

Nord Stream 2 is a joint venture between\u00a0Russia’s Gazprom and France’s\u00a0Engie, Austria\u2019s OMV AG, UK-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell, and Germany’s\u00a0Uniper\u00a0and Wintershall.<\/p>\n

The project aims to\u00a0deliver 55 billion cubic meters of\u00a0Russian natural gas a year to\u00a0the European Union across\u00a0the Baltic Sea to\u00a0Germany. The project has been welcomed by\u00a0some countries in\u00a0Europe, such as\u00a0Germany and Austria, and opposed by\u00a0others, including eastern European states, which currently transfer Russian gas to\u00a0Europe and may suffer transit revenue drops if Nord Stream 2 becomes operational.<\/p>\n
