\u00a0The German prosecutors raided on Tuesday two facilities of the BMW car manufacturer \u2014 the company’s headquarters in Munich and a site in Austria \u2014 as part of a pre-trial probe into a suspected diesel emissions fraud, media reported.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The prosecutors suspect the car producer in\u00a0the installation of\u00a0a special defeat device that downplayed polluting during\u00a0laboratory tests in\u00a0about 11,400 cars, the Financial Times newspaper reported. According to\u00a0the prosecutors, the mechanism that manipulated emissions was used in\u00a0the 750xd and M550xd models.<\/p>\n

BMW, in\u00a0its turn, confirmed the raids and refuted any deliberate cheating, saying that the engine management software was installed in\u00a0the vehicles by\u00a0a mistake. The car producer stated that the malfunction had been recorded during\u00a0internal testing by\u00a0the company, adding that it intended to\u00a0recall the cars, the newspaper added.<\/p>\n

“The BMW Group realized that a correctly developed software module had been allocated in\u00a0error to\u00a0models for\u00a0which it was not suited\u2026 A corrected software will be made available as\u00a0soon as\u00a0it has been approved by\u00a0the relevant authorities,” the carmaker was quoted as\u00a0saying by\u00a0the Financial Times.<\/p>\n

The scandal around\u00a0the usage of\u00a0emissions cheating software erupted in\u00a0Germany in\u00a02015, when automaker Volkswagen turned out\u00a0to be involved in\u00a0falsifying emissions test results for\u00a0its diesel-engine cars. The issue resurfaced in\u00a0July, when media reported that leading German automakers had coordinated their actions on\u00a0matters such as\u00a0designing diesel emissions treatment systems in\u00a0diesel vehicles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
