Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei addressed the nation on Iranian New Year, praising the country’s policies amid tensions with Washington and crises in the Middle East.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Iran “defused regional threats\u00a0\u2014 one of\u00a0their aims was to\u00a0harm the Islamic Republic\u00a0\u2014 these threats did not damage our country, but\u00a0turned into\u00a0opportunities,” Khamenei said on\u00a0Tuesday as\u00a0Iranians are celebrating the Nowruz holiday.<\/p>\n

He was echoed by\u00a0President Hassan Rouhani, who paid tribute to\u00a0Iran’s “humble soldiers and tireless diplomats were able to\u00a0stand with\u00a0the people of\u00a0Iraq, Syria and Lebanon to\u00a0establish stability and increase security for\u00a0the region.”<\/p>\n

Along with Russia, Iran has been helping Syria overcome the threat of Daesh and declared the end of the terrorist group in November 2017.
\nShiite Iran has also been at loggerheads with the Sunni Saudi Arabia, with tensions including accusations of supporting terrorism and even touching upon the development of nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

Tehran has been under pressure from the United States, with US President Donald Trump slamming the internationally approved Iran nuclear deal and Washington taking the side of protesters during unrest in Tehran in December and January.<\/p>\n

Trump, meanwhile, also congratulated Iranians on their New Year, while at the same time blasting the authorities for their social policies.<\/p>\n

Iranian Foreign Minister Muhammad Javad Zarif published a tweet condemning “the insults of an arriviste leader” keen on social media \u2014 and though the particular leader was not named, the statement caused many to turn their eyes across the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
