There is no one formally authorized to sell them in the southern African country, nor can anyone admit owning one, or going still further and using one even in private. Controversial sex dolls, recently blasted by Nigerian Muslims, have raised a national debate in Zambia with more and more voices against the state\u2019s harsh stance popping up.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Zambian liberals, namely from\u00a0The Patriots for\u00a0Economic Progress (PEP)\u00a0 party, claim the government’s negativity towards\u00a0sex dolls reflects its increasingly authoritarian character under\u00a0 incumbent President Edgar Lungu.<\/p>\n

The government initiated a massive crackdown on\u00a0the sex toys, which are largely produced in\u00a0China, last month: it banned them outright as\u00a0well as\u00a0threatened offenders with\u00a0serious jail terms over\u00a0trade or use of\u00a0silicone dolls, which it considers to\u00a0be “very unnatural”.<\/p>\n

“Being a Christian nation, obviously we are anchored in\u00a0Christian principles and one of\u00a0the values is morality and ethics,” Minister of\u00a0National Guidance and Religious Affairs Godfridah Sumaili earlier told media, adding that the use of\u00a0similar toys contradicts the African nation\u2019s heritage and principles.<\/p>\n

She continued to\u00a0say that as\u00a0God created men and women to\u00a0engage in\u00a0a sexual intercourse, it would be “immoral” to\u00a0make use of\u00a0an inanimate object for\u00a0this purpose, for\u00a0men and women alike.<\/p>\n

Sean Tembo, who leads the country\u2019s fringe liberal PEP, quickly weighed in\u00a0on the debate.<\/p>\n

“The argument that the Bible does not allow the use of\u00a0any objects is wrong,” says Tembo. He goes on\u00a0to say that the book of\u00a0books promotes free will and it would be wrong to\u00a0put a person to\u00a0jail for\u00a0merely exploiting a silicone doll. He justifies the point by\u00a0saying that some have low self-esteem and find it difficult to\u00a0find a partner.<\/p>\n

Given staggering AIDs adult infection rate, which is roughly 12.4, he assumes that the use of\u00a0sex dolls may possibly push it down. “Men can use sex dolls and this will help reduce the cases of\u00a0AIDS,” he said, contesting the minister’s claim they were illegal.<\/p>\n

After all, he says, there is no reason why this should be illegal in\u00a0a country that has issued no formal ban on\u00a0such imports or on\u00a0masturbation.<\/p>\n

“The use of\u00a0sex dolls will be in\u00a0private, in\u00a0one’s bedroom and not in\u00a0a public place,” Tembo underscored.<\/p>\n

There seems to\u00a0be a loophole, however in\u00a0the country\u2019s legislation, with\u00a0officials saying that sex dolls fall under\u00a0a constitutional law that bars one from\u00a0making, owning, importing, selling or displaying \u201cobscene matters or things.\u201d The afore-mentioned offense leads to\u00a0a hefty fine or a prison term of\u00a0a maximum five years.<\/strong><\/p>\n

To note, Zambia is a predominantly conservative nation where homosexuality carries a prison sentence of 14 years.<\/p>\n

Since the state newspaper Zambia Daily Mail reported on Minister Sumaili\u2019s anti-sex-doll campaign the issue has been a hot topic of discussion, with many citizens publicly denouncing the move as one that violates privacy and the freedom of choice.<\/p>\n

“I would order a sex doll without hesitation,” the newspaper cited an unnamed male passenger as saying.<\/p>\n

“I am assured of a disease-free relationship because a sex doll will not cheat on me. They are not materialistic and will forever remain faithful,\u201d he said, thus outlining the obvious strong points of sex dolls. “Government is now violating our privacy as citizens,” he said.<\/p>\n

Just days earlier, a female Muslim students\u2019 gathering at Lagos State Polytechnic in Nigeria condemned sex dolls as “unnecessary invention” and insisted that women play greater roles in the family and society than purely “sex objects,” Guardian Nigeria reported.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
