A sea of farmers has thronged India\u2019s financial capital Mumbai, protesting the government\u2019s apathy towards their plight. Estimated in the tens of thousands, the protesting farmers reportedly walked hundreds of kilometers to reach Mumbai, where they intend to stage a sit-in until their demands are heard.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thousands of distressed farmers from India’s west-central state of Maharashtra are camping at Azad Maidan in the state capital of Mumbai after marching 180 kilometers on foot. The demonstrators comprise members of the All-India Kisan Sabha \u2014 the farmer’s wing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) as well as farmers’ unions backed by other political parties active in the state.<\/p>\n

According to local reports, farmers from across Maharashtra first gathered in the city of Nashik, from where they started their foot journey to Mumbai last Tuesday. While the unions have claimed their numbers to be more than 50,000, independent media reports have suggested there are around 35,000 currently camping at the site.<\/p>\n

The farmers are basically demanding the effective implementation of\u00a0the loan waiver scheme announced by\u00a0the Maharashtra government. They are also demanding a waiver of\u00a0electricity bills as\u00a0they claim to\u00a0have incurred heavy losses in\u00a0the last few seasons due to\u00a0the failure of\u00a0monsoon resulting in\u00a0low crop yield. They are also demanding a higher MSP\u00a0\u2014 minimum price for\u00a0procurement of\u00a0farm produce, which is fixed by\u00a0the government every crop season. Meanwhile, aboriginal tribes engaged in\u00a0farming activities in\u00a0forest land are demanding that they may be given complete ownership of\u00a0the land they have been cultivating.<\/p>\n

The protesting farmers have earned the empathy of\u00a0the urban population, who have come out\u00a0in large numbers to\u00a0provide them with\u00a0humanitarian as\u00a0well as\u00a0moral support. A large number of\u00a0Mumbaikars were seen distributing food, water, and footwear to\u00a0the farmers marching in\u00a0the heat and dust, most of\u00a0them barefoot.<\/p>\n

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has assured the farmers that their concerns would be taken care of.<\/p>\n

Chief Minister of\u00a0Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis told the media that the government was positive about\u00a0answering their demands, and that since\u00a0the first day of\u00a0the Morcha (demonstration), they’d discussed various issues with\u00a0the farmers. However, he said, they were firm about\u00a0going through\u00a0with the march.<\/p>\n

Opposition parties including the Indian National Congress (INC), the Shiv Sena, and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have also extended full support to\u00a0the protesting farmers.<\/p>\n

Noted Bollywood actor and leader of\u00a0ruling BJP Shatrughan Sinha commended the discipline of\u00a0the protesting farmers on\u00a0Twitter.<\/p>\n

“The whole nation supports and salutes our farmers protest march for\u00a0their democratic rights in\u00a0the most disciplined manner. It is a learning experience for\u00a0many of\u00a0us. Hope wish and pray that good sense prevails upon\u00a0our people and all the demands are met and settled amicably.”<\/p>\n

NC President and leader of\u00a0the opposition in\u00a0Parliament Rahul Gandhi described the farmers’ demand as “just.”<\/p>\n

“The mammoth farmers march to\u00a0Mumbai is a stunning example of\u00a0people’s power. The Congress party stands with\u00a0the farmers and trials marching to\u00a0protest against\u00a0the Central and State Government’s apathy. I appeal to\u00a0the PM Modi and the CM to\u00a0not stand on\u00a0ego and to\u00a0accept their just demands,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.<\/p>\n

Although more than\u00a050 percent of\u00a0India’s population is engaged in\u00a0agriculture, the sector contributes only 15% to\u00a0the nation’s total GDP. Recurrent drought, a scarcity of\u00a0water for\u00a0irrigation combined with\u00a0a lack of\u00a0modern farming equipment have led to\u00a0a steep fall in\u00a0productivity and income, forcing farmers to\u00a0take out\u00a0huge loans.
