Russian President Vladimir Putin has advised Britain to deal with the poisoning of former GRU colonel Sergei Skripal at home before discussing the incident with Russia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Asked by\u00a0a BBC journalist whether Russia was involved in\u00a0Skripal’s suspected poisoning, Putin replied: “You sort it out\u00a0for yourselves, and then we will discuss this with\u00a0you.”<\/p>\n

Journalists accompanied Putin during\u00a0his visit to\u00a0National Grain Center in\u00a0the southern Russian city of\u00a0Krasnodar. In his response to\u00a0the BBC, the Russian president stressed that he had come to\u00a0the region to\u00a0discuss agriculture.<\/p>\n

On Monday, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the suspected poisoning of\u00a0former Russian military intelligence colonel Sergei Skripal was not Russia’s issue. “We have not heard statements from\u00a0British politicians or official representatives that Russia is involved in\u00a0this case. What we’re talking about\u00a0is ‘informational gymnastics’ in\u00a0the British media, which are not always known for\u00a0their objectivity,” he said.<\/p>\n

Peskov emphasized that Skripal “had worked for\u00a0one of\u00a0the intelligence services of\u00a0the UK, and that this is in\u00a0no way, shape or form a matter for\u00a0the Russian Federation, let alone its leadership.”<\/p>\n

Russian ex-spy and MI6 double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were found unconscious at\u00a0a shopping center in\u00a0Salisbury, Wiltshire on\u00a0March 5. Police have suspected that they were poisoned using a nerve agent. They remain in\u00a0hospital in\u00a0critical condition.<\/p>\n

Skripal was convicted of\u00a0cooperating with\u00a0MI6 in\u00a02006 and sentenced to\u00a013 years for\u00a0high treason. In 2010, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev pardoned Skripal as\u00a0part of\u00a0a spy swap program with\u00a0the US, and the ex-spy moved to\u00a0the UK.<\/p>\n

UK Parliament Foreign Affairs Select Committee chairman Tom Tugendhat has\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0that the Skripal case looks like\u00a0a “state-sponsored attempted murder,” without\u00a0elaborating. Over the past\u00a0week, British media have accused Russia of\u00a0involvement, a claim which Moscow slammed for\u00a0lack of\u00a0evidence. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said that the Skripal case has been used to “further incite an anti-Russian campaign in\u00a0Western media.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
