{"id":118937,"date":"2018-03-05T19:43:29","date_gmt":"2018-03-05T17:43:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=118937"},"modified":"2018-03-05T19:43:29","modified_gmt":"2018-03-05T17:43:29","slug":"unhrc-resolution-on-syria-has-nothing-to-do-with-human-rights-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=118937","title":{"rendered":"UNHRC Resolution on Syria Has Nothing to Do With Human Rights Concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"b-article__lead\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>The UN Human Rights Council has adopted the UK-proposed draft resolution condemning huge violations of human rights in Syria as well as attacks on civilians and the alleged &#8220;use of chemical weapons in East Ghouta&#8221;; Russia-proposed amendments stipulating a ban on assisting terrorists have been rejected.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"b-article__text\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>The Russian Foreign Ministry said on\u00a0Monday that the adopted resolution is irrelevant regarding real concerns about\u00a0human rights violations in\u00a0East Ghouta and doesn&#8217;t address the issue of\u00a0humanitarian aid deliveries to\u00a0civilians.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry noted that the UK delegation&#8217;s position proves that, as\u00a0they &#8220;with the support of\u00a0the United States, refused to\u00a0back the amendments proposed by\u00a0Russia and a number of\u00a0other states which were aimed at\u00a0condemning terrorism in\u00a0Syria, the shelling of\u00a0Damascus by\u00a0militants, and warning illegal armed groups against\u00a0preventing civilians from\u00a0leaving East Ghouta.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"marker-quote1\">&#8220;Thus, the representatives of\u00a0the United States and the United Kingdom actually acknowledged their own unwillingness to\u00a0comply with\u00a0the requirements of\u00a0UNSC resolution 2401 and, in\u00a0fact, confirmed their support for\u00a0the terrorists in\u00a0East Ghouta, many of\u00a0which are associated with\u00a0Al-Qaeda,&#8221; the statement reads.<\/p>\n<p>By condemning the rejection of\u00a0the amendments, the Foreign Ministry has followed in\u00a0the footsteps of\u00a0Russian diplomats, who also blasted the\u00a0UNHRC resolution. Russian permanent representative to\u00a0the UN Office in\u00a0Geneva Gennady Gatilov said that those who initiated the resolution are &#8220;supporting militants, turning a blind eye to\u00a0their crimes&#8221; and are &#8220;not interested in\u00a0the resolution of\u00a0the Eastern Ghouta crisis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The resolution, which was adopted in\u00a0a 29-4 vote with\u00a014 abstentions, condemns attacks on\u00a0medical facilities and civilian infrastructure, &#8220;airstrikes against\u00a0civilians,&#8221; and the &#8220;alleged use of\u00a0chemical weapons in\u00a0East Ghouta.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Russia sought to add clauses to the document stating that the countries condemn all terrorist acts in Syria, including those in East Ghouta, and agree not to provide any support for terrorists, as well as include in the document a paragraph on the crimes of militants against civilians and the deliveries of humanitarian aid to East Ghouta.<br \/>\nThe vote in the UNHRC follows the adoption of the UN Security Council resolution urging a 30-day truce on the entire territory of Syria to ensure the safety of humanitarian aid and the medical evacuation of those injured.<\/p>\n<p>The tensions in Eastern Ghouta have been running high over the past several weeks with the militants, including those from the former Nusra Front, violating ceasefires and preventing civilians from leaving the embattled suburbs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UN Human Rights Council has adopted the UK-proposed draft resolution condemning huge violations of human rights in Syria as well as attacks on civilians and the alleged &#8220;use of chemical weapons in East Ghouta&#8221;; Russia-proposed amendments stipulating a ban on assisting terrorists have been rejected.
