\u00a0In the wake of Italy’s general elections held on Sunday, Roberto Jonghi Lavarini, the right-wing Brothers of Italy party’s candidate, in an interview to Sputnik spoke about Italy’s future policy on anti-Russian sanctions, as well as possible allocation of posts in the new government.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

On Anti-Russian Sanctions<\/strong><\/p>\n

The right-wing coalition government that may become a reality following\u00a0Italy’s general election would work on\u00a0lifting anti-Russian sanctions and resuming a privileged dialogue with\u00a0Moscow instead of\u00a0focusing on\u00a0the EU project, Lavarini said.<\/p>\n

“The future center-right government will be friends with\u00a0Russia, will work on\u00a0lifting the economic sanctions and resuming a privileged dialogue with\u00a0President Vladimir Putin and the Eurasian world,” he noted, adding that his party would request the revision of\u00a0all international treaties, including those concerning Italy’s membership of\u00a0the eurozone and NATO, in\u00a0favor of\u00a0a strategic alliance with\u00a0Eurasia.<\/p>\n

Politicians and business leaders in\u00a0a number of\u00a0EU countries, including Italy, have been increasingly vocal in\u00a0their appeals to\u00a0improve their relations with\u00a0Russia that deteriorated following\u00a0the outbreak of\u00a0the Ukrainian crisis. In May, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni praised the state of\u00a0Russian-Italian relations, saying that the ties have proven to\u00a0be “extremely successful.”<\/p>\n

At the same time, the results of\u00a0the legislative vote, which currently have Eurosceptic parties in\u00a0the lead, indicate the country\u2019s critical attitude toward\u00a0the European Union.<\/p>\n

Italy’s parliamentary elections were held on\u00a0Sunday. According to\u00a0the results, two Eurosceptic parties received the majority of\u00a0votes, while the pro-European ruling Democratic Party (PD) did not manage to\u00a0receive even 20 percent of\u00a0the vote.<\/p>\n

Matteo Salvini’s far-right Lega (formerly Lega Nord), a party which criticizes EU policies and has anti-immigrant views, surpassed its main coalition ally, the establishment Forza Italia party of\u00a0former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, with\u00a0almost 18 percent of\u00a0the vote. The center-right coalition, which also comprises right-wing Brothers of\u00a0Italy and the Us with\u00a0Italy party, is currently winning with\u00a037.5 percent of\u00a0the vote. However, in\u00a0order to\u00a0have the right to\u00a0form the country’s government, the coalition should receive at\u00a0least 40 percent of\u00a0the vote.<\/p>\n

Brothers of\u00a0Italy Candidates May Become Interior, Defense Ministers in\u00a0New Gov\u2019t<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lavarini told Sputnik that he expected his party to\u00a0fill in\u00a0the interior or defense minister positions in\u00a0addition to\u00a0several deputy minister posts in\u00a0the right-wing coalition government that may be formed after\u00a0Sunday\u2019s parliamentary elections.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0the politician, even though the party was hoping for\u00a0better results than\u00a0the 4.5 percent it received in\u00a0Sunday\u2019s general election, it would play a “fundamental role” in\u00a0the next Italian government as\u00a0a coalition partner.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, the center-right coalition, consisting of\u00a0Lega, former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia, right-wing Brothers of\u00a0Italy and the Us with\u00a0Italy party, won 37.48 percent of\u00a0the vote in\u00a0the upper house and 36.96 percent in\u00a0the lower house. Lega won more than\u00a017 percent of\u00a0seats in\u00a0each chamber of\u00a0the Italian parliament. The anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) is leading with\u00a0over 32 percent\u00a0\u2014 the best result achieved by\u00a0any individual party.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
