{"id":118609,"date":"2018-03-04T02:28:44","date_gmt":"2018-03-04T00:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=118609"},"modified":"2018-03-04T02:28:44","modified_gmt":"2018-03-04T00:28:44","slug":"brexit-campaigner-calls-customs-union-nonstarter-for-meaningful-eu-uk-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=118609","title":{"rendered":"Brexit Campaigner Calls Customs Union \u2018Nonstarter\u2019 for Meaningful EU-UK Talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"b-article__lead\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>\u00a0The idea of a customs union between the UK and the EU cannot serve as a basis for a transitional deal, the sides had better stick to the single market as an interim model and focus on a customs clearance deal, the Operations Manager for the cross-party Campaign for an Independent Britain (CIB), John Petley, told Sputnik.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"b-article__text\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Petley spoke to\u00a0Sputnik right after\u00a0Prime Minister Theresa May&#8217;s landmark speech on\u00a0Friday focusing on\u00a0the future UK-EU partnership, in\u00a0which she reiterated that the country intended to\u00a0leave the Customs Union in\u00a0order to\u00a0pursue an independent trade policy, but\u00a0would remain committed to\u00a0ensuring frictionless trade with\u00a0the bloc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"marker-quote1\">&#8220;I think as\u00a0far as\u00a0the customs union is concerned\u2026 it&#8217;s a non-starter and was never a prominent part of\u00a0the referendum campaign for\u00a0one very good reason and that&#8217;s because it simply doesn&#8217;t work. If you actually study what the customs union is it&#8217;s basically the [EU] member states plus a few microstates\u2026 the only big country that&#8217;s not in\u00a0the EU but\u00a0is associated with\u00a0the customs union is Turkey, and it simply doesn&#8217;t work there,&#8221; Petley stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"marker-quote1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/1061617300.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-118614 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/1061617300-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"1061617300\" width=\"623\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/1061617300-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/1061617300-1024x664.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"marker-quote1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Petley characterized the single market as\u00a0a better option to\u00a0ensure seamless EU-UK trade during\u00a0the interim period and pointed to\u00a0a customs clearance agreement as\u00a0a way out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"marker-quote1\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The customs union is a dead duck and the sooner people realize what we need is a customs clearance agreement and stop fixating on\u00a0the customs union in\u00a0the abstract the sooner we can move on\u00a0to something more sensible,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to\u00a0Petley, the United Kingdom has so far failed to\u00a0demonstrate enough coherence during\u00a0the negotiations with\u00a0the European Union. Brussels tried to\u00a0get more clarity out\u00a0of London by\u00a0suggesting to\u00a0retain a common regulatory area between\u00a0the EU member state Republic of\u00a0Ireland and Northern Ireland, Petley pointed out.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier welcomed May&#8217;s Friday clarifications on\u00a0the United Kingdom leaving the single market and the customs union.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The United Kingdom began negotiations with\u00a0the European Union on\u00a0its departure from\u00a0the bloc in\u00a0June last year.
