Bahrain Seizes Weapons, Arrests 116 Members of Alleged Iran-Linked Terror Cell<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Bahrain on Saturday announced the arrest of 116 people accused of forming a terrorist cell allegedly tied to Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards, and said the country had averted a number of attempted terrorist attacks by the group on its security forces and its oil and other vital facilities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

State news agency BNA revealed that security services had seized a number of\u00a0arms and 42 kilograms of\u00a0explosives as\u00a0part of\u00a0their investigation.<\/p>\n

“The roles of\u00a0terrorist elements have varied in\u00a0planning, preparation and execution between\u00a0explosive carriers and field outlet, they were responsible for\u00a0manufacturing, transporting and storing explosive materials,” a Saturday statement from\u00a0Bahrain’s Interior Ministry said, according to\u00a0Arab News.<\/p>\n

“Iran’s Revolutionary Guards worked to\u00a0form these terrorist elements by\u00a0uniting several terrorist organizations and collecting them in\u00a0a single framework and are behind\u00a0the support, funding and training of\u00a0elements of\u00a0terrorist organizations,” the statement went on.<\/p>\n

“Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have intensified recruitment of\u00a0terrorist elements and provided them with\u00a0funds, firearms and improvised explosive devices.” As many as\u00a048 of\u00a0those detained had been trained in\u00a0using explosives, firearms, artillery and even grenade launchers at\u00a0IRGC facilities in\u00a0Iran, Iraq and Lebanon, the Interior Ministry claimed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sunni-ruled Bahrain, with its Shia majority population, frequently accuses Tehran of secret destabilizing efforts, which Tehran consistently denies.<\/p>\n

Since the mass uprisings of\u00a02011, when Bahrainis clamoured for\u00a0an elected government and were brutally repressed, Manama has cracked down\u00a0further on\u00a0dissent. The country frequently invokes the death penalty for\u00a0charges of\u00a0terrorism, as\u00a0it did most recently on\u00a0Monday, when a death sentence for\u00a0what Bahrain described as\u00a0an Iran-linked bombing targeting police was upheld. Those convicted of\u00a0terrorism or similar charges are also often stripped of\u00a0citizenship.<\/p>\n
