The men, from relatively developed areas of China, traveled many hours to join this cross-border transnational blind date organized by a matchmaking service. Here they will meet Russian women with whom they have previously chatted online, usually assisted by a translator.<\/p>\n

During the most recent trip organized by Chinese agent Golden Marriage in Vladivostok, a Russian city not far from Russia’s borders with China, five of the 10 Chinese single men were matched successfully with a future spouse.<\/p>\n

As China and Russia usher in a sub-national cooperation exchange, the two countries are also extending their cooperation to nongovernmental levels and deepening their friendship through facilitating personal connections. Intermarriage is now becoming part of it.<\/p>\n

With Chinese Ambassador to\u00a0Russia Li Hui’s public speech early this month highlighting that China and Russia are stepping into\u00a0a new era, more Chinese agencies are catering to\u00a0the dating interests of\u00a0Chinese men seeking attractive Russian women.<\/p>\n

A keyword search for “China-Russia transnational marriage” on\u00a0Baidu, the leading searching engine in\u00a0China, shows various dating agencies providing massive opportunities for “Chinese rich single men” to\u00a0find their “perfect transnational marriage,” as\u00a0read on\u00a0a web advertisement by\u00a0the agent.<\/p>\n

At China’s doorstep<\/strong><\/p>\n

Russia is now at\u00a0China’s doorstep. The Siberian Times reports that cities such as\u00a0Blagoveshchensk, opposite\u00a0the Chinese city of\u00a0Heihe, Heilongjiang Province, have seen an upsurge in\u00a0cross-border marriages.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Singles’ tours for\u00a0upscale Chinese businessmen to\u00a0Russia are a fairly new and evidently popular trend, matching lonely hearts with\u00a0beauties from\u00a0the former Soviet Union. Golden Marriage recently started a “Sino-Russian Transnational Marriage Fair” in\u00a0Vladivostok.<\/p>\n

“The Russians living here have a lot of\u00a0contact with\u00a0the Chinese. Due to\u00a0the relatively slow economic development here, the willingness of\u00a0the girls to\u00a0marry abroad is stronger than\u00a0elsewhere, because they appreciate Chinese men’s merits, such as\u00a0being considerate and family-oriented,” the agent said.<\/p>\n

More than\u00a0a normal transnational dating tour, the agent has enriched the process of\u00a0the “international marriage fair” with\u00a0extras ranging from\u00a0introducing bilateral intermarriage history to\u00a0offering training sessions for\u00a0Chinese and Russian etiquette to\u00a0attendees.<\/p>\n

Lin, owner of\u00a0the Golden Marriage, upgraded his business to\u00a0the level of\u00a0national interest, asserting that his business “does not only benefit young singles of\u00a0both countries, but\u00a0also submits to\u00a0the Belt and Road national strategy.”<\/p>\n

“There is no form of\u00a0cultural exchange more powerful and effective than\u00a0intermarriage,” he pitched to\u00a0the public.<\/p>\n

“The historical bond and geographical proximity China has with\u00a0this Eastern Euro country contributes to\u00a0the market,” Lin interpreted. “Moreover, as\u00a0China has more marriageable men than\u00a0women, encouraging Russian girls to\u00a0marry into\u00a0China can well alleviate the gender imbalance concern in\u00a0China.”<\/p>\n

Imbalanced gender ratio<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Moskovskij Komsomolets, a Moscow-based daily newspaper, released an article titled “Russian men in\u00a0shortage: Chinese group blind date tour in\u00a0Russian” [English translation] to\u00a0suggest that China’s export of “leftover” bachelors appears to\u00a0be a solution to\u00a0the current imbalanced gender ratio in\u00a0Russia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A piece by\u00a0the People’s Daily Overseas Edition released data in\u00a02017 estimating that around\u00a015 million men in\u00a0China between\u00a0the ages of\u00a035 and 59 will not be able to\u00a0find wives by\u00a02020. This is where Lin finds his niche. He and labels his business “very promising in\u00a0the future.”<\/p>\n

Calling for\u00a0more support from\u00a0authorities, Lin wishes that encouragement measures for\u00a0Sino-Russian marriage could be “finally written into\u00a0the Belt and Road program.”<\/p>\n

Sun Zhuangzhi, an expert in\u00a0Sino-Russian relationships from\u00a0the Chinese Academy of\u00a0Social Sciences, does not see any possibility of\u00a0taking intermarriage formally into\u00a0the Belt and Road national strategy.<\/p>\n

“The authority has no political limitation on\u00a0cross-border marriage, but, practically, we can only expect them to\u00a0promote the nongovernmental contacts and youth interaction between\u00a0the two countries here and now.”<\/p>\n

In 2016, some Chinese matchmaking agents started to\u00a0organize for\u00a0their male clients\u00a0\u2014 with “being financially successful” as\u00a0the only selection criterion for\u00a0participating\u00a0\u2014 travel to\u00a0Russia for\u00a0romance and marriage, reported the newspaper.<\/p>\n

Regardless of\u00a0the actual success rate, which is yet to\u00a0be confirmed, the high expectation of\u00a0those clients comes with\u00a0high price tags. Deep-pocketed bachelors have to\u00a0pay 29,800 yuan ($4,683) for\u00a0a typical six-day trip to\u00a0Vladivostok to\u00a0meet Russian women, according to\u00a0Golden Marriage.<\/p>\n

Some agencies even organize language and customs training classes with\u00a0extra fees before\u00a0departure for\u00a0those who wish to\u00a0boost their chances of\u00a0catching a Russian beauty.<\/p>\n

Such tours, however, drew wide criticism on\u00a0Chinese social media and were accused of\u00a0human trafficking as “a fancy international prostitution ring.”<\/p>\n

“In the name of\u00a0helping ‘elite single men’ get a successful transnational marriage, such transactions materialize Russian women and abuse the pure relationship,” read one comment on\u00a0Chinese social media Sina Weibo.<\/p>\n

Tatyana, a Russian woman who owned a China-based dating agency, revealed to\u00a0the Global Times that illegal agents even pay “Russian brides” to\u00a0scam those men who crave exotic women during\u00a0so-called singles’ tours.<\/p>\n

Stereotypes remain<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is not the first time the media has highlighted the phenomenon of\u00a0Chinese men marrying Russian women as\u00a0a solution to\u00a0China’s “leftover men” issue.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Chinese Husband + Russian Wife = The Perfect Combination,” an advert sponsored by\u00a0China Radio International in\u00a0Russian newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta, sparked controversy among\u00a0Russians for\u00a0eulogizing Chinese men’s diligence, caring and loving natures, and sensitivity, of\u00a0which Russian men are reportedly lacking partly due to\u00a0their macho culture.<\/p>\n

Though the trend of\u00a0Russian women marrying Chinese men may indicate a new phenomenon, many Chinese students who have experience living in\u00a0Russia say that it is still in\u00a0the fledgling stage and not yet widespread.<\/p>\n

A few dating agents told the Global Times that the proportion of\u00a0Russian women who have the intention of\u00a0marring Chinese men remains very small.<\/p>\n

“It is less common among\u00a0my friends,” said Chen, 25, who has spent five years in\u00a0Russia and has a Russian girlfriend. “Russian girls at\u00a0our university actually rate European men higher than\u00a0Chinese men.”<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the couple has been in\u00a0a relationship for\u00a0nearly three years, though Chen’s girlfriend was repeatedly asked by\u00a0her Russian friends why she chose a Chinese over\u00a0others, whereas Chen’s Chinese friends, who regard Russia and Ukraine as\u00a0a “land of\u00a0beauties,” “feel nothing more than\u00a0envy and blessing.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some agents admit that only brides from\u00a0less economically developed areas of\u00a0Russia or Ukraine can be a “hot import” to\u00a0China.<\/p>\n

“We usually send our Chinese clients to\u00a0small Russian cities in\u00a0the far eastern area, because it is economically less developed. Girls from\u00a0these communities are more open to\u00a0marrying a foreigner for\u00a0better financial security,” Tatyana explained.<\/p>\n

“But those from\u00a0the capital or other first-tier cities with\u00a0a better education background or financial capability prefer European men, either because of\u00a0a higher level of\u00a0culture commonality or closer geographical proximity,” she added.<\/p>\n

Such priority applies equally to\u00a0Chinese women who are willing to\u00a0marry foreigners. Feng Fan, a Chinese woman who spent three years in\u00a0Russia, feels “it is more typical to\u00a0see the intermarriage combination formula of\u00a0a male from\u00a0a developed country with\u00a0a female from\u00a0a less developed one.”<\/p>\n

She suggests that China’s economic boom in\u00a0recent decades makes many Chinese women less willing to\u00a0marry Russian men. Besides, Feng said China’s limited contact with\u00a0Russia results in\u00a0some stereotypes that Chinese women hold against\u00a0Russian men. In her experience, Chinese overseas students in\u00a0Russia remain a very small group compared with\u00a0cohorts surging in\u00a0Western countries.<\/p>\n

The cross-border intermarriage trend between\u00a0China and Russia, in\u00a0addition to\u00a0increasing Chinese migration into\u00a0Russia in\u00a0recent years, has also raised some eyebrows about\u00a0China’s growing influence in\u00a0Russia\u00a0\u2014 using suitcases and marriage certificates instead of\u00a0politics.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The Russian Far East is becoming China’s safety valve, much like\u00a0Mexico lets off\u00a0population pressures with\u00a0migration into\u00a0the United States. Only 7.4 million Russians populate the entire Russian Far East, versus more than\u00a070 million in\u00a0northeast China,” ABC News wrote in\u00a0an editorial.<\/p>\n

Sun Zhuangzhi dispelled such speculation. “In northeastern regions of\u00a0China, we share a very similar population structure with\u00a0Russia, which makes our government unlikely to ‘export singles to\u00a0other countries’ but\u00a0rather to\u00a0encourage them to\u00a0remain in\u00a0the local community.”<\/p>\n

“If there was a certain degree of\u00a0official support, I believe it only existed in\u00a0a looser birth policy, which allowed those transnational couples to\u00a0have more than\u00a0one in\u00a0the past\u00a0decades,” Sun explained.<\/p>\n
