The Nordic Asa-Community alone has grown to over 800 members over just a few years, whereas older communities are picking up in numbers as well, the newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported. The name of the faith, Asatro, translates as allegiance to the \u00c6sir, a set of deities in Norse mythology.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;It is important for us to preserve our traditions. We do not know how many of our traditions have already disappeared. They will never be able to be recreated, so it is important to ensure that nothing is left out of time, and to revive our Nordic traditions and our way of life,&#8221; Stenar Sonevang of the Nordic Asa-Community told Dagens Nyheter.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to Sonevang, one of the founding members of the society, it was founded in 2014 and was approved as a religious community in 2016. Since then, it has grown from 50 to over 800 members. Sonevang described himself as a &#8220;seeker&#8221; who has never felt at home with either the Church of Sweden or Abrahamic religions as such, even though he was baptized as a child. Many used to sit in their cottages and hold offerings in their gardens, but there has been no organized alternative,&#8221; Sonevang explained.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">By Sonevang&#8217;s own admission, the ambition is to grow further.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;There is no limit. Heaven is the limit. We shall see. Iceland was the world&#8217;s largest Asatro community, but we&#8217;re next largest after only four years, for all I know,&#8221; Sonevang explained.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Nordic Asa-Community chairman H\u00e5kan Ljunggren, who was introduced to\u00a0Asatro by\u00a0his grandfather in\u00a0a bid to\u00a0hold the Christian influences at\u00a0bay, argued that pagans get a lot of\u00a0bad publicity due to\u00a0neo-Nazis often resorting to\u00a0the same runes and Viking imagery. In 2017, there was a debate in\u00a0Sweden on\u00a0banning the Tyr rune as\u00a0a hate symbol.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">READ MORE: &#8216;Come to\u00a0Stay&#8217;: Muslim Community Clamors for\u00a0Minaret Calls to &#8216;Enrich Sweden&#8217;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Also Sonevang contested that linking the Asa-Community with\u00a0Nazism and racism was &#8220;saddening.&#8221; Although the rune was utilized by\u00a0the Nazis during\u00a0WWII and today&#8217;s neo-Nazis, the symbol is much older than\u00a0that and certainly doesn&#8217;t change its meaning because other groups misuse it, he argued.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DWLxLn9UMAAg-j9.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-118250 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DWLxLn9UMAAg-j9-188x300.jpg\" alt=\"DWLxLn9UMAAg-j9\" width=\"188\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DWLxLn9UMAAg-j9-188x300.jpg 188w, https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DWLxLn9UMAAg-j9.jpg 471w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 188px) 100vw, 188px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"marker-quote1\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;We are excited to\u00a0reach out. But it becomes surreal when you read that the Nordic Asa-Community are evil Nazis, while we only stood here and celebrated Freyja [the goddess of\u00a0love, beauty and fertility] and love,&#8221; Sonevang said. &#8220;Last year, there was a lot of\u00a0talk about\u00a0the Nordic Resistance Movement, but\u00a0they are a completely independent organization. We work with\u00a0Asatro and are a non-political religious community,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u200bSonevang argued that being proud of\u00a0one&#8217;s origins or traditions was not tantamount to\u00a0racism, but\u00a0rather was &#8220;common sense.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Iceland, where paganism is the most popular religion after\u00a0Christianity, is currently trying to\u00a0get its first pagan temple in\u00a0hundreds of\u00a0years. The \u00c1satr\u00fa temple in \u00d6skjuhl\u00ed\u00f0 in\u00a0Reykjavik is expected to\u00a0be ready in\u00a0the latter part of\u00a02018.
