{"id":117035,"date":"2018-02-12T23:17:18","date_gmt":"2018-02-12T21:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=117035"},"modified":"2018-02-12T23:17:18","modified_gmt":"2018-02-12T21:17:18","slug":"european-criminals-laundering-billions-with-bitcoin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=117035","title":{"rendered":"European Criminals Laundering Billions With Bitcoin"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"b-article__lead\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>European criminals have been using the anonymity of cryptocurrency to launder as much as $5.5 billion in ill-gotten money a year, according to the European Union\u2019s policing arm.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"b-article__text\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Speaking to\u00a0the BBC, Europol director Rob Wainwright said the agency estimated $137.5 billion in\u00a0illicit currency is circulating through\u00a0Europe\u00a0\u2014 and 4 percent of\u00a0it was being exchanged via\u00a0cryptocurrencies like\u00a0bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"marker-quote1\">Crypto transactions are untraceable, making it far more difficult for\u00a0police to\u00a0combat these transfers. &#8220;[Cryptocurrencies] are not banks and [thus] governed by\u00a0a central authority, so the police cannot monitor those transactions,&#8221; Wainwright said. &#8220;And if they do identify them as\u00a0criminal they have no way to\u00a0freeze the assets, unlike\u00a0in the regular banking system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The EU has passed laws to\u00a0counteract bitcoin&#8217;s anonymity. All bitcoin purchases require a &#8220;fingerprint&#8221; that attaches a name to\u00a0the transaction\u00a0\u2014 but\u00a0the same is not true of\u00a0bitcoin transfers. Police may be able to\u00a0find out\u00a0where the money came from, but\u00a0not where it went.<\/p>\n<p class=\"marker-quote1\"><strong>&#8220;It&#8217;s very difficult for\u00a0the police in\u00a0most cases to\u00a0identify who is cashing this out. They have to\u00a0take a responsible action and collaborate with\u00a0us when we are investigating very large-scale crime. I think they also have to\u00a0develop a better sense of\u00a0responsibility around\u00a0how they&#8217;re running virtual currency,&#8221; Wainwright said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other cryptocurrencies, such as\u00a0Monero and Zcash, prove an even harder challenge: they both use randomized algorithms that make both the source and destination of\u00a0purchases almost untraceable. Wainwright added that more and more criminals are switching to\u00a0these alternative cryptocurrencies for\u00a0that very reason.<\/p>\n<p>Criminals accept cryptocurrency payment for\u00a0drugs, then cash the cryptocurrency out\u00a0for clean, traditional money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"marker-quote1\">Wainwright called on\u00a0crypto developers to\u00a0coordinate with\u00a0police more and &#8220;develop a better sense of\u00a0responsibility&#8221; as\u00a0their open-source currency increases in\u00a0political and economic relevance with\u00a0every passing day.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin exploded in\u00a02017 from\u00a0about $1,000 per coin at\u00a0the beginning of\u00a0the year to\u00a0almost $20,000 at\u00a0its peak in\u00a0December. The value has contracted rapidly since\u00a0then and sits at\u00a0about $8,500 at\u00a0the time of\u00a0this writing.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, it was revealed that BrowseAloud, a plugin meant to\u00a0make websites more readable to\u00a0visually impaired people, was a mule for\u00a0a hijacking program that converts computers visiting certain websites into\u00a0cryptocurrency miners, using electricity drawn by\u00a0the computer to\u00a0facilitate bitcoin generation. Among the infected websites included some used by\u00a0the British government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"marker-quote1\"><strong>And earlier in\u00a0February, a Welsh drug dealer was sentenced to\u00a0eight years in\u00a0prison when he was found guilty of\u00a0operating a dark web pharmacy that sold the highly addictive opioid fentanyl.
