PM Theresa May, health minister Jeremy Hunt and other Britons reacted fiercely to Trump’s tweet criticising Britain’s publicly funded healthcare system as “going broke and not working.”<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

President Trump made a stab at\u00a0Britain’s National Health Service on\u00a0Monday, tweeting that Britons were marching in\u00a0the streets because their universal health-care system was dysfunctional and unrpofitable and decided not to\u00a0borrow it as\u00a0US Democrats were suggesting.<\/p>\n

It didn’t take long for\u00a0ardent Britons to\u00a0respond to\u00a0the criticisn. Twitter users flooded to\u00a0defend the NHS, pointing out\u00a0that the march Trump referred to\u00a0was organized by\u00a0groups which want to\u00a0increase the health service’s funding, and not decrease it. A quick response from\u00a0Theresa May showed her strong position on\u00a0the issue.<\/p>\n

“The prime minister is proud of\u00a0having an NHS which is free at\u00a0the point of\u00a0delivery. NHS funding is at\u00a0a record high, and was prioritised in\u00a0the budget with\u00a0an extra \u00a32.8bn. In the recent Commonwealth Fund international survey the NHS was rated the best in\u00a0the world for\u00a0a second time.” said PM’s spokesman.<\/p>\n

Even Health Secretary Hunt, one of\u00a0the main targets of\u00a0the protesters’ anger, replied on\u00a0Trump’s tweet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to\u00a0the World Bank, Britain spends 9.1 percent of\u00a0its GDP on\u00a0healthcare, compared to\u00a017.1 percent in\u00a0the United States. Despite such reassurance, last month May apologized after\u00a0the health service postponed tens of\u00a0thousands of\u00a0non-emergency operations to\u00a0free up\u00a0staff and beds to\u00a0deal with\u00a0emergency patients.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
