The attack took place late Saturday, claiming the lives of at least five people.\u00a0The Taliban terror group has claimed responsibility for\u00a0the deadly attack on\u00a0the\u00a0Intercontinental Hotel in\u00a0Kabul, that killed at\u00a0least five\u00a0people, the Reuters news agency reports, citing Afghani officials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The assault started at\u00a0about 9:00 p.m. local time (16:30 GMT) and was followed by\u00a0the siege by\u00a0the country’s special forces when several gunmen dressed in\u00a0army uniforms stormed the hotel and took several people hostage, keeping others trapped in\u00a0their rooms. In total, the siege took about\u00a013 hours.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0the AP news agency, the attack took place during\u00a0a conference by\u00a0the\u00a0Telecommunication Ministry, which brought together at\u00a0least 34 local officials. As the agency reports, citing the Interior Ministry, a private firm took responsibility for\u00a0the hotel’s guarding three weeks before, with\u00a0the investigation opened to\u00a0find out\u00a0how the attackers managed to\u00a0get into\u00a0the\u00a0tightly guarded luxury hotel, popular among\u00a0foreigners.<\/p>\n

\u200bThis was the second attack at\u00a0the Intercontinental Hotel in\u00a0Kabul: the first one took place in\u00a02011, claiming the lives of\u00a012 people, with\u00a0all nine attackers eliminated as\u00a0a result.\u200bAfghanistan has a long history of suffering from Taliban activity, a militant group created in the 1990s and aiming to establish strict Sharia law in Afghanistan and Pakistan.<\/p>\n
