Israeli Defense Minister Vows to Destroy All Tunnels in Gaza Strip in 2018<\/h1>\n

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman vowed to destroy all tunnels in the Gaza Strip within a year and proposed to the Palestinians a deal envisaging assistance in reconstruction in exchange for disarmament.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Israeli military has claimed it developed a breakthrough technology that has already allowed it to\u00a0detect and destroy three underground border crossings within\u00a0the last two months.<\/div>\n
\n

“The defense minister said that all such [diversionary] tunnels would be destroyed by\u00a0the end of\u00a02018,” press service of\u00a0Liberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu party said.<\/p>\n

The destruction of\u00a0tunnels and construction of\u00a0an underground belt around\u00a0the Gaza Strip are two key points of\u00a0Liberman’s program on\u00a0settling the situation in\u00a0the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n

The politician also proposed that strikes be carried out\u00a0in response to\u00a0any rocket launch from\u00a0the Gaza Strip, which would thereby undermine Hamas’ capabilities and boost Israeli settlement near\u00a0the Palestinian enclave.<\/p>\n

“And the last important initiative\u2026 is in\u00a0fact a formula, under\u00a0which Israel is ready to\u00a0co-exist with\u00a0the [Gaza] Strip\u00a0\u2014 reconstruction in\u00a0exchange for\u00a0disarmament,” the party said.<\/p>\n

Liberman noted that last year, Hamas invested $260 million in\u00a0the production of\u00a0rockets and tunnel construction.<\/p>\n

“If they had invested these funds in\u00a0the water system or health care system, they would have been in\u00a0a totally different situation,” the minister added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

For decades, Israel has been in\u00a0conflict with\u00a0the Palestinians, who have been seeking diplomatic recognition for\u00a0their independent state on\u00a0the territories of\u00a0the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, which are partially occupied by\u00a0Israel, and the Gaza Strip.The Israeli government refuses to\u00a0recognize Palestine as\u00a0an independent political and diplomatic entity and continues to\u00a0build settlements in\u00a0the occupied areas, despite\u00a0objections from\u00a0the United Nations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
