Two U.S. B-1B heavy bombers joined large-scale combat drills over South Korea on Thursday amid warnings from North Korea that the exercises and U.S. threats have made the outbreak of war \u201can established fact.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The annual U.S.-South Korean \u201cVigilant Ace\u201d exercises feature 230 aircraft, including some of the most advanced U.S. stealth warplanes, and come a week after North Korea tested its most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) to date, which it says can reach all of the United States.<\/p>\n

North Korea\u2019s foreign ministry blamed the drills and \u201cconfrontational warmongering\u201d by U.S. officials for making war inevitable.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe remaining question now is: when will the war break out?\u201d it said in a statement. \u201cWe do not wish for a war but shall not hide from it.\u201d<\/p>\n

China, North Korea\u2019s neighbor and lone major ally, again urged calm and said war was not the answer, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said North Korea wanted direct talks with the United States to seek guarantees on its security, something Moscow was ready to facilitate.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope all relevant parties can maintain calm and restraint and take steps to alleviate tensions and not provoke each other,\u201d Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe outbreak of war is not in any side\u2019s interest. The ones that will suffer the most are ordinary people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on the sidelines of a conference in Vienna that U.S. military exercises and aggressive rhetoric were causing an unacceptable escalation in tension.<\/p>\n

Lavrov said he had passed on to Tillerson Pyongyang\u2019s desire for direct talks.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that North Korea wants above all to talk to the United States about guarantees for its security. We are ready to support that, we are ready to take part in facilitating such negotiations,\u201d Interfax news agency quoted Lavrov as saying.<\/p>\n

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said direct talks with North Korea were \u201cnot on the table until they are willing to denuclearize.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is something that Russia says it agrees with; it is something China has said it agrees with, and many other nations around the world as well,\u201d she told a regular briefing.<\/p>\n

Nauert said North Korea was \u201cnot showing any interest in sitting down and having any kind of serious conversations when they continue to fire off ballistic missiles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another State Department spokesperson, Justin Higgins, said it was not enough for North Korea to freeze its nuclear program, and it \u201cmust be prepared to come to the table ready to chart a course to \u2018cease and roll back\u2019\u201d that program.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Zheng Zeguang was to meet Matt Pottinger, the head of Asian affairs at the White House\u2019s National Security Council, on Thursday to discuss North Korea and trade, a senior U.S. official said.<\/p>\n

Tensions have risen markedly in recent months over North Korea\u2019s development, in defiance of repeated rounds of U.N. sanctions, of nuclear-tipped missiles capable of reaching the United States.<\/p>\n

Last week\u2019s missile test prompted a U.S. warning that North Korea\u2019s leadership would be \u201cutterly destroyed\u201d if war were to break out. The Pentagon has mounted repeated shows of force after North Korean tests.<\/p>\n

STRATEGIC BOMBERS<\/h3>\n

In September, after North Korea\u2019s sixth and largest nuclear test, B-1Bs flew further north along North Korea\u2019s coast than at any time in the past 17 years. The sortie prompted Pyongyang\u2019s foreign minister to warn that U.S. bombers could be shot down even if they did not enter North Korean airspace.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yang Uk, a senior fellow at the Korea Defence and Security Forum, said B-1Bs would be key to any strike targeting major North Korean facilities.<\/p>\n

\u201cB-1B bombers have been regularly dispatched to the Korean peninsula over the past years; however, it seems that the U.S. Air Force might have enhanced its training to better prepare for actual warfare,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Both sides insist they don\u2019t want war, while saying they will act to defend themselves.<\/p>\n

U.S. national security adviser H.R. McMaster said at the weekend the possibility of war was \u201cincreasing every day.\u201d He said Trump was prepared to take action against North Korea but was working to convince China, Russia and others to do more to press Pyongyang to get it to give up its weapons programs.<\/p>\n

U.S. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham urged the Pentagon on Sunday to start moving U.S. military dependants out of South Korea, saying conflict with North Korea was getting close.<\/p>\n
