{"id":108505,"date":"2017-11-09T03:44:21","date_gmt":"2017-11-09T01:44:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=108505"},"modified":"2017-11-09T03:44:21","modified_gmt":"2017-11-09T01:44:21","slug":"u-s-judge-issues-gag-order-in-manafort-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=108505","title":{"rendered":"U.S. judge issues gag order in Manafort case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>The judge presiding over the criminal case against President Donald Trump\u2019s former campaign manager issued a gag order on Wednesday barring anyone involved in the case from making public statements that might taint it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"43\">Paul Manafort and his associate Rick Gates were arraigned in federal court in Washington last week on a 12-count indictment that accused them of conspiring to launder money, failing to disclose foreign bank accounts and failing to register as foreign agents of Ukraine\u2019s former pro-Russian government.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"44\">U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said in her written order she wanted to make sure the trial was fair and that potential jurors were not influenced by pre-trial publicity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"DPSlot_container_2dHIN DPSlot_inline_1oeo6\" dir=\"ltr\">She directed the defendants, all lawyers and any potential witnesses to \u201crefrain from making statements to the media or in public settings that pose a substantial likelihood of material prejudice\u201d to the case.<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jackson had previously warned lawyers about discussing the case publicly after Manafort defense lawyer Kevin Downing made a defiant statement outside the courthouse following his client\u2019s arraignment on Monday.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"48\">\u201cThis is a criminal trial and not a public relations campaign,\u201d Jackson said in court last week.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"49\">Downing, appearing before television cameras on Monday, said the charges against Manafort were \u201cridiculous\u201d and said the president was correct to insist there was \u201cno evidence the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"50\">The charges against Manafort and Gates stem from special counsel Robert Mueller\u2019s probe of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"51\">Manafort and Gates have both pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"52\">The Kremlin has denied meddling in the election and Trump has denied any collusion took place.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"53\">Downing did not respond to a request for comment. Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"54\">Jackson had asked the parties last week if they had any objections to a gag order. None responded.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"55\">Downing\u2019s statements outside the courthouse had raised eyebrows among defense lawyers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"57\">\u201cJudge Jackson is a no-nonsense judge and he\u2019s clearly angered her to no purpose,\u201d said Eric Lewis, a longtime Washington trial lawyer.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But Los Angeles defense lawyer Mark Geragos said he thought Downing might indeed have had a purpose in mind: currying favor with Trump in the hopes of eventually securing Manafort a presidential pardon.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe cynic in me would say that was exactly what was happening,\u201d said Geragos, \u201cthat there was an audience of one.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The judge presiding over the criminal case against President Donald Trump\u2019s former campaign manager issued a gag order on Wednesday barring anyone involved in the case from making public statements that might taint it.
